The Australian government has started a new National Disability Insurance Scheme. It was started by our previous labor Government about half way through last year, as we had a change of Government about four months ago, the disabled community is concerned with what cuts and changes will be made to the scheme. If its left alone it should be good. They started a roll out program in selected pilot areas last july and seems to be working, of course i missed out by 500kms , I will have to wait till 2016 to benefit from it.
The NDIA will also work in close partnership with local communities to improve inclusion and people with disability. The Agency will also look at fostering innovation, research and best practice to better support people with disability. In building awareness of disability across the general community we can address the things that can make a difference to everyday life for people with a disability, their families and carers.
It is a very comprehensive program covering the disabled person and their families and carers, It is really about time that Australia got it's disability programs on track, at the moment you have to deal with many different Government departments to get anything done. Very frustrating at times.
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) will ensure that people with disability are given every opportunity to make their own decisions and exercise choice and control. We recognise that the role of families and carers is often essential in supporting people with disability to realise these goals.
So how does all this compare to the country that you live in ?
If you are a person with disability and you meet the access requirements you can become a participant in the National Disability Insurance Scheme. As a participant, you will be able to access NDIS individualised planning processes to identify the reasonable and necessary supports you need to enable you to achieve your goals. To get an idea about whether you meet the access requirements, you can use My Access Checker.
Please note that if you wish to become a participant in the NDIS, you must complete an Access Request Form. The Access Request Form is an official document. You should only complete an Access Request Form that has been provided to you by the National Disability Insurance Agency. Duplicate forms may not be accepted.
This sounds like a great initiative for Australia Butiki I can see that if this works effectively it will certainly make a difference to the every day lives of those with disabilities.
In the UK we we have the equality law, this enables the individual with disability to be able to access, education, work, healthcare and benefits...holidays etc without disadvantage. We are very fortunate that there is no cost in this country for any of this.
The disability community is worried because this new government, who I voted for, is starting to cut programs that it promised not too leading up to the federal election, but like all governments, they tell fibs. But they have promised only today they will leave this program alone, In fact improve it, and that's what worries me when I hear the word " improve" and yes Lαrα we are talking billions of dollars here.
Butiki, we also have this kinda system in Canada as well and I think it's great that Australia is implementing it too! It's too bad it doesn't apply where you live but at least it's not too far away
