Most herniated discs are caused by disc degeneration although some can also be caused by injury. When a disc herniates the inner core of the disc which can be likened to a hard gel matter, leaks through. This hard gel then puts direct pressure onto the cervical nerve.
The compressed or pinched nerve can cause pain to radiate down the arm and tingling/numbness that spreads down to the fingers.
The cervical part of the spine refers to the upper back and neck area: C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6, C7
Symptoms of cervical herniated disc:
C4 - C5 (C5 nerve root) - Can cause weakness in the deltoid muscle in the upper arm. Does not usually cause numbness or tingling. Can cause shoulder pain.
C5 - C6 (C6 nerve root) - Can cause weakness in the biceps (muscles in the front of the upper arms) and wrist extensor muscles. Numbness and tingling along with pain can radiate to the thumb side of the hand. This is one of the most common levels for a cervical disc herniation to occur.
C6 - C7 (C7 nerve root) - Can cause weakness in the triceps (muscles in the back of the upper arm and extending to the forearm) and the finger extensor muscles. Numbness and tingling along with pain can radiate down the triceps and into the middle finger. This is also one of the most common levels for a cervical disc herniation (see Figure 1).
C7 - T1 (C8 nerve root) - Can cause weakness with handgrip. Numbness and tingling and pain can radiate down the arm to the little finger side of hand.
I do love it when the info like this is found to be useful, its a great feeling!
Your informational posts have helped me immensely! I have become a student of my body, and anything that makes for deeper understanding of how it works or what I might try to alleviate pain, injury, etc. is most welcome.
Great info Lara...I have herniated cervical discs...manifest it self in finger weakness. No idea why I can't feel my legs. Rocket fuel exposure is probably the best explanation.
Burning hands, pain and weakness in my left arm, pain in my shoulders and arms, to include issues breathing if I lay flat on my back. All of those are tied to me C4 and C5 root nerves that have been experiencing for the last 2 to 3 years and the VA doctors don't care enough to do anything about it! Welcome to Obamacare!
Thankyou guys, im pleased the post is helpful and truwrecks, thats not good eh? cbdives, are you taking it further to find out?wavewolf you and me too, understanding is half the battle!
Hi Lαrα, 1st off: Great work and research on your part here and elsewhere on this forum...we owe you immensely for that and I thank you for it.
to the point...you might be ablle to explain to me why I have suddenly started to experience symptoms of cervical issues. I am CES T12 -S1 incomplete and am still in rehab clinic for the last three months. About a month ago I started experiencing numbness in my hands upon awakening and it has developed into pain in the shoulders and hands. Preddominantly on the left side. It has gotten progressively worse and the pain is now more prominent in the morning than the pain from my CES, which seems to respond better to the morphine than this does. I have had a MRI a couple of days ago and am awaiting the results with bated breath. I realize that thiis is probably due to degenerative problems related to my lower back issues. The question is why would it rear its ugly head at the same time or is it a cconsequence of it? And WHY? I will be consulting with the local quack when he receives the results but he is French and as good as my french is, I still get to a point when they start talking medical like the cartoon Snoopy when the adults talked: "qwaakwakwquaquakwa..."

This get back to my story Hamlet. I really didn't want to load anymore to your plate because it is already quite full. I hope the MRI comes back with some positive results, you deserve a break. I had similar issues, it turned out to be stenosis in my C5 through C7. It had compressed my cord and needed surgery. The plus was I walked out of the hospital next day, nowadays it's not much of a deal. Ok, the negative side is I always get full fondling by the TSA.
hmalbet that started to happen recently eh? Any other CES members noticed parts of your body being affected that is higher than your injury level?
It's probably best you get a full scan again to check and confirm that everything's ok. Do you think you can set up an appointment to see your neurosurgeon?
