DJ, I'm still awaiting results from the MRI. Taken longer to get results that it took to get the appointment! The doctor here thinks it might be due to the fact that I'm using my arms and shoulders more than I have been used to since being wheelchair and walker-bound. More weight on the cervical area but he wants to see what the MRI says. From what I've read so-far it wouldn't surprise me as there are probably genetic factors like stenosis, osteophytes and osteoarthritis that were the factors in my CES. My family tree is gnarly with back issues and osteoporosis on both sides.
Hi Lαrα , 1st off: Great work and research on your part here and elsewhere on this forum...we owe you immensely for that and I thank you for it.
to the point...you might be ablle to explain to me why I have suddenly started to experience symptoms of cervical issues. I am CES T12 -S1 incomplete and am still in rehab clinic for the last three months. About a month ago I started experiencing numbness in my hands upon awakening and it has developed into pain in the shoulders and hands. Preddominantly on the left side. It has gotten progressively worse and the pain is now more prominent in the morning than the pain from my CES, which seems to respond better to the morphine than this does. I have had a MRI a couple of days ago and am awaiting the results with bated breath. I realize that thiis is probably due to degenerative problems related to my lower back issues. The question is why would it rear its ugly head at the same time or is it a cconsequence of it? And WHY? I will be consulting with the local quack when he receives the results but he is French and as good as my french is, I still get to a point when they start talking medical like the cartoon Snoopy when the adults talked: "qwaakwakwquaquakwa..."
That doesn't make sense hmalbet, using your arms and shoulders more than you did before should not cause the symptoms that you're experiencing. Not sure what those doctors are saying! In that case, there'd be a lot more people who would have experienced what you're experiencing but it doesn't look like there's many others that have.
I'm interested to see what the scan shows but hopefully it's nothing concerning!
Wow...what an interesting trip this has been...("May you live in interesting times" the chinese curse goes)...I just got the results of the MRI. Turns out I have stenosis in C4 through C7 with herniation at C5-6 and a bunch of other stuff in latin very much sounding like the scan report from my CES. The resident quack recomends that I see a neurosurgeon ASAP as this is quite serious. The surgeon that did my back was not a neurosurgeon it turns out and as I am not a resident here he says this can wait until I get back to Canada but I definitely shouldn't put it off too long. I explained to him that an appointment with a specialist in Canada could take months. He suggested that I present myself immediately upon my return home to the local emergency department and hope that they can expedite matters if I couch it in terms that make it look quite urgent.
He also says that this could be the reason that my recovery for the CES is so slow and that CES and cervical disc herniations are quite commonly associated. Operative word here though is "could". He says it definitely needs to be assessed by a neurosurgeon.
This is the scariest rollercoaster ride I've ever been on and I've done some hair raising things in my life. I want to get off...I'm getting nauseous.
I got some good news today though...I'm going to be released from here next week...the weekend pass test was a success. I had a friend install some sturdy banisters so that I can get down the stairs at my house here to the bedroom and toilet without breaking my neck...(oops...no pun intended) and with great care and attention I should be able to negotiate the pitfalls of home living without too much difficulty.

Try to stay positive, this will be behind you in no time. It's sounds like we were on the same coaster, next ride for me is the Merry-go-round, and I'm sitting in the bench.
Wow I'm sorry to hear that hmalbet! I think it's best to take it easy until you get back to Canada and head to emerge ASAP. If anything I'd say wear a neck brace!

I will take that under advisement but I'm surprised that the resident quack did'nt mention it. I get released tomorrow so I will ask him then if that might not be a good idea. My cousin who's a doctor has explained in plain layman terms what the MRI report says and has relieved me somewhat. It's not as serious as it sounds in Latin but serious nonetheless. I will head straight to emergency upon my return to Vancouver and hopefully they will expedite things that way. The "family physician has to refer you to a specialist" system is unbelievably slow and I recall having been refered to a gastro and that appointment took over two years to come through. When it did the original complaint was forgotton.

Yeah just go in and explain the symptoms and get them to do a scan so that they can take care of it quick. The doctor referrals are pretty bad from what I've heard.
