I probably won't get many replies, at least not now when the forum is still so small, but I'm looking for feedback from anyone that caths and has either full sensation or partial sensation.
Since I don't have paralysis I don't have any diminished sensation when it comes to cathing. I'm still new to it, and don't need to cath every time I go. I've had difficulty peeing all my life and used my abdominal muscles to pee. Sometimes I'm still not able to pee even forcing with my abdominal muscles. Thats become more frequent over time, plus I finally talked to the right Drs who became concerned that these issues had been ignored for years. So I've been cathing since December. I'm supposed to try to pee before I cath, so that I don't completely lose the ability to pee without the catheter. But I'm not supposed to force as hard (uhm, how hard am I? haha. Thats a confusing one for me) and supposed to cath enough that I don't have urine retained for long periods. I have pelvic dysfunction with vaginismus, and they believe the muscle spasms are what prevent me from urinating normally.
So, now that I've given a background here's my question! Is burning normal? My uro told me that some women experienced it but that it would go away over time. Hasn't gone away. Not only is there burning during cathing, but theres a sort of burning for a certain period of time after I've cathed. It makes me feel like I have to pee, which is pretty irritating and I KNOW my bladder is empty since I cathed. Part of the issue is also my struggle with what type of catheter I use. I have a lot of issues with the regular vinyl catheters. I have some diminished function in my hands from peripheral neuropathy, and it makes it difficult for me to lubricate the catheter and then control it during insertion. With the vinyl ones it burns a lot on both insertion and removal of the catheter. I wonder if I'm making it worse because of the struggling to lubricate it well. When I used speedicath compact catheters they usually only burn removing and not while inserting (hydrophillic and don't need lube), and the shorter catheter and rigid plastic part makes it easier to control and insert. With the vinyl ones I'm frequently touching somewhere with the tip or side before making it in my urethra. Sometimes I even have to throw out the catheter and open another one because I think its too risky to use it still. So with this... I also wonder if the burning might be a mild UTI going on. I don't get normal UTI symptoms, actually most of mine have been diagnosed when I presented for nonstop vomiting. But I also have GI issues so its not like every time I start vomiting or getting nonstop vomiting its a UTI. When I think I'm getting one for stuff like more trouble urinating, and urinating small amounts frequently and pain I've taken grape fruit seed extract which is a natural antimicrobial.
I love this forum's draft saving feature. While typing the end of this post a huge spider came down between my face and my laptop in the dark... I'm terrified of spiders. I grabbed the closest things to me... My bra and socks I'd removed and started slapping at the spider on the keyboard. Succesfully killed it. And chrome. And a few other programs that had been running. And my laptop wanted to restart. All is fine now though, except me jumping a mile at shadows.
