At one time or another, I've had all of the symptoms described thus far. However, my doctors have me on 1200 mg a day of gabapentin (Nerontin) and I take ALA for my diabetes. It really helps my blood sugar readings, but since it was added to my regimen after I was already on gabapentin, I don't know if it helps with the nerve pain or not.
Being 14 months in now with CES, I only have nerve pains in my butt, backs of thighs, and feet (mostly the right one). These pains are as described in previous posts. Back in December, I regained feeling in my right ankle and noticed something wrong - turns out that I had torn a tendon while I couldn't feel it. I guess that's what walking like Frankenstein does for you!
I get those annoying symptoms of nerve pain, too, Knight! Plus killer muscle spasms on top of that. I usually have to totally change my position, & location, no matter if it's day or night. My poor husband is used to it & comes as soon as he hears me moaning in pain. I also get the weird sensation that a rat is gnawing on my right foot/toes. I have to look & check....really strange! My newest horror is pain in both hands & arms, but especially the hands. It seems to have started after my latest hospitalization, where I was stuck a lot, mostly when I was unconscious. My pain specialist wants to increase my internal pump (fentanyl & baclofen) up another 15%. He just turned it down dramatically because I was too sedated....maybe it's too low? I guess it's time to experiment. I just know I'm miserable...
Did you just add the ALA Knight? Or did you just replace it instead of your regular meds. I agree Ladylimpsalot, we are all different, with different levels of nerve pain.
I wasn't on anything for my nerve pain when I added it to my regimen of regular meds. It didn't work and I am noe trying Lyrica
DJ....the fentanyl in my pump is for pain, the baclofen in the pump is for spasms. I've had the pump in for 3 years. It's supposed to eliminate the need for oral meds, but i was on a lot of oral meds too, until my recent health scare. My husband says I took "a trip to the dark side of the moon" (!) for 4 days. All I know is I remember being at the mall on Friday night....then I woke up very early Thursday morning tied to a hospital bed in the ICU. So I'd say it was longer than 4 days. So now my pump is about 1/5th of the dose I was getting before. I now take an occasional pain pill, before it was every 3 hours! But now my spasms are terrible, especially in my thoracic area, & my neck. All my muscles just ache constantly. I'm thinking more baclofen, not more fentanyl. I have tried Lyrica in the past, it did not help.
The Alpha Lipoic Acid made my nerve pain skyrocket. It made it ten times worse...
I know that the ALA relieves my nerve pain, and it has for many of my friends. I guess that we are not all the same!
ALA, especially the R form (http://www.vitacost.com/vitacost-r-alpha-lipoic-acid-stabilized-rala-100-mg-60-capsules-1), has significantly reduced my neuropathic pain. But we are not all the same! Lyrica and gabapentin helped pain, but caused weird weight gain (L) and brain fog (L, g) for me.
I can relate to the pain dannygilman and kilg0retr0ut describe. My primary injury is at L3, but I have lesions throughout spinal cord and brain, and my pain is tingling/crawling/numb plus electric jolts plus feeling that skin is shredding off (especially in bed). I am at the point where I need to consider using pain meds again, because I am so exhausted by pain. However I do not want to return to the anti-convulsants (Lyrica, gabapentin). May increase R-ALA, will continue low dose of Baclofen (not a pain med, but my pain is much worse without it), and am going to talk with neurologist about adding PEA (palmitoylethanolamide) to the mix.
I am trying Lyrica now, and I have to say, I have some sensations in my leg I've never felt before. I can touch my leg without cringing in pain. This is odd.
How's the torn tendon now? Has it healed completely?
Ha! I wish, DJ. I was told that surgery would be the only cure, however, the brace I was given has done a great job of delaying the need for that. After I paired it with a pair of firm counter shoes (Redwing 5504 in case anybody wonders) I've had even less pain. I am hopeful that the orthopedic podiatrist was wrong and that the tendon will heal. I still have some tendon pain, but nowhere near what it was and certainly not enough to warrant surgery! Thanks for asking!

That's good to hear cesdavid! If you can avoid surgery that's the best thing to do

That is really good news! Hoping that it wasn't torn completely and can heal. Scars are strong tissue!
