Progressions and variations
More advanced: Progress using strength training principles.
I did these types of exercises starting a few days after my injury/surgery. I had horrible trunk control, which, I know, is rare to hear about a T12, but I had no strength, control, or stability from the bottom of my ribs down. I was still in spinal shock for over a month because my spine got infected. I still do a lot of trunk control exercises to keep my abs functional (to the most I can get them to function anyway). And I always strap in my vehicles because simply taking a corner can move me quite a bit in my seat. I have better leg control in my right leg than I have trunk control. Odd, I know.
I did a lot of balance exercises too. Sitting and reaching for things and playing hot potato were very helpful in regaining trunk stability.
I do the boxing exercises with my therapist twice a week. My injury is T3 incomplete, since May 2013. I have poor trunk control, & always fall over to my right side. I'm wondering how long it will take to get to get my muscles to get stronger. My therapist says it can take a long time! I'm frustrated!
anita, it took me about 2 weeks to get good enough trunk control to do daily activities like lean to the side of my chair to pick something up, and stuff like that. I still use my arm(s) a lot to stabilize myself while I lean this way and that way. It will come. You'll also adjust to your body and how it responds. You will still fall over sometimes, definitely. But just keep at it. It's been almost 2 years since my injury, and I still have trouble with balance in my trunk! ??? You'll get it down.

anita...just keep up the work...you will get stronger. You are still early in your injury so you have improvements to make still and even after nerve regeneration has settled you can still work on strengthening muscles.
Just dont give up if you see little progress..I always say this but keep a diary on progress because you will see actually how much you are achieving when you look back through it
At T3 your injury level is higher than Knight's for example so you may take longer to build your trunk up but it will come for sure....work hard and your efforts will pay off..
