da4phipps, you're still very early into your injury and have made great recovery so far. Don't let what the doctors say get you down, just keep up the hard work, you've got plenty of recovery time
hey da4phipps.....the key to having any chance of beating this spinal cord injury business is hard work, remaining positive and never giving in or up. You are in the very early stages of recovery so you will make further progress...indeed
Thank you guys. I have good days and bad days dealing with everything. My physical therapist keeps telling me...."Listen to your body and it is ok to take a day off and rest on bad days" and he also tells me, "the Dr. that caused this said you would more then likely never do what you are already doing." Exercise is one of the best therapies.
da4phipps, I agree completely with what your physiotherapist says! The work you're doing is great but like your physiotherapist says, have some rest if you need it.
I agree with this 100% I have an illness that effects my whole body and the only way I have of coping with it is by listening when it tells me when to push and when to take it easy. Even on the days I feel I can do more I have to pull my self up and say stop. Other wise I know the next day I would be wiped out and all the hard work the day before go's down the drain. It can be feel like 3 steps forward and 3 steps back. But as they say Rome was not built in a day.

Great advice. When I train my clients I remind them that reorganizing the nervous system is like exercising muscles; It will fatigue so you need to rest and recover. Rest and recovery from exercise and training is just as, if not more, important than the workout itself.. Give your body time to respond to what you're doing. That way you can continue building!
Since i will be on my holidays soon i ve decided to try very hard to get back in shape. I ve been fitted with callipers and wish to start gait training again. They cost a few bob and its a pity i do not use them to the maximum. I really wish to be a self home trainer Last physio session i had nearly 2 years ago ended up with a massive row with the allocated physio. The service is state run and free of charge, private physio would cost an arm and a leg. however i was not at all happy with the service given. this is a small island with only one rehab centre in which all types of injuries are given treatment at the same place meaning it is not not only SCI. the room basically is just a room, a few walkers and two stand frames. Physios only work normal working hours so i have to take special leave from work.Parking is a nightmare too, I was given dumb weights to do exercises alone infront of a mirror and then an hour in a standing frame looking at the wall and trying to make conversation to kill time. Added in was the strikes and work to rule union disputes physios had. I hated it as to increase their conditions of work people like me had to suffer. After a work to rule directive of not answering phones i missed two sessions meaning a month had passed. When i went again the physio said i now needed a spinal doctors certificate for assessment in order to start again as time had passed. I took this as a she did not feel like working on the day, a feel i had long suspected as i had long felt the typical Gov dept syndrome. this sent me off like a bomb fire which ended up in the managers office. The manager explained to me how difficult it was to work with limited resources and how hard it was for physios whom do their best with whats given. Its their right for industrial action and that i could of called an another time when not on industrial action as is it was bulletin news i said If i was on fire now i now became dynamite. I too work as a vocational teacher with limited resources and never have i given shoddy service to my students . To cut a long story short the argument escalated, i was then escorted out by not one but two security. In some odd way i do brag and laugh about it. was i that intimidating? Maybe their is some logic too the dept had only 5 physios but i did see about 3 security minding one gate.
Woah, that's crazy delboy, I can't believe that! I hope you don't have to go through that again. Working out and getting into shape sounds like a great idea! I'll be doing that this summer as well
Yes DJ Its a drawback of living on a small island, today i wasted 3 hours looking for new shower chair castor wheels. The supplier never has anything in stock orders form the internet doubles the price and sells locally. Found an industrial stainless steel pair in a hardware store used in the catering industry and adapted them. Had to go back for size 17 bolts and the same daily drill of parking issues and access, needed to drill wider bolt holes too but at At least the bearings are rust proof now. the chair is really an issue to shop around for supplies and then improvise your own maintenance . This island really promotes the art of improvisation, same thing with fitness and calliper use, more of the same as i see it with local rehab should i go back. thank god i have the internet for ideas too.

Necessity is the mother of invention! You need stainless steel for shower, but what a chore to drill this material. Glad you got the problem solved.
Defiantly exercise helps to keep you going and I find a cycling machine helps my leg and back muscles to relax , I used a very expensive one recently in a hotel gym which was so much smoother than my old one at home which really helped my legs but I expect it would be well out of my budget.
I really want to invest in some equipment now after reading this so can anyone suggest anything? I cannot move my legs voluntarily.
I use a powered pedaler purchased on Amazon. I use it one hour every day. I've gone from having a very difficult time just keeping my feet on to very little assistance on just one leg. I think this piece of equipment was the best bang for the buck ($160.00). I have no swelling in my ankles.
I put some grip tape over the pedals to help keep my feet on the pedals.
