One of our members, recently brought an article to my attention on the safety of Lyrica. I didn't want to post the article that was sent to me until I had taken a look at the advices that are on the net. Now that I have spent a little time doing this, i thought it would be a good idea to post some of the results up. Of course, if you are concerned and taking Lyrica then please contact your medical practitioner or spinal unit if they still oversee your care.
This is an extract from the article below.
Neurontin and its newer more potent version, Lyrica, are widely used for off-label indications that are an outright flagrant danger to the public. These blockbuster drugs were approved for use even though the FDA had no idea what they actually did in the brain.
A shocking new study shows that they block the formation of new brain synapses1, drastically reducing the potential for rejuvenating brain plasticity – meaning that these drugs will cause brain decline faster than any substance known to mankind.
The problem of these drugs is compounded by their flagrant illegal marketing. Neurontin was approved by the FDA for epilepsy back in 1994.
The drug underwent massive illegal off-label promotion that cost Warner-Lambert 430 million dollars (the very first big fine for off-label promotion). The drug is now owned by Pfizer. Pfizer also owns Lyrica, a super-potent version of Neurontin. It has been approved by the FDA for various types of pain and fibromyalgia. Lyrica is one of four drugs which a subsidiary of Pfizer illegally marketed, resulting in a $2.3 billion settlement against Pfizer.
This article does seem a few years old, i should mention..Its worth considering everything and also do your own reasearch!
It is important not to panic or worry if you are taking Lyrica but instead talk to a professional, It is very important to not just stop taking the drug either as this may cause you to have serious affects.

I'm not even going to read. Lyrica works for me, whatever it does, it's better than the alternative for me. Thanks for pointing out the dangers. If you can function with something else, take it.
They advertise Lyrica on the tube here, a few seconds about it's benefits and the rest about possible side effects! and the list is long. Hey if it works for you great but personally I couldn't wait to wean myself off 2 1/2 years ago.

I get harsh shocks, every time I've come close to weaning off it they return. They get to the point were I get little to no sleep for 3-4 days at at time. I shocked away for over two years and got to the point I could barely function. I have a family and I'm not much good to them in that shape. Normal neuro pain I can handle, not so much the shocks. I guess I'm soft.
Its everyone to their own, we each find what works and what doesent....There is a risk with any medication so its just a matter of weighing one up against another and coming to a balanced decision.
The FDA and drug companies can help the process by being completely open about risks and trial each drug effectively. As consumers we should be told exactly which drugs have undergone strict research for safety and which havent.

Cannabis is what allowed me to wean and stay off, any relief I got from lyrica took hours to kick in whereas now it's instant and easily increased without worry of side effects or overdose.
Drug companies are in it for the money, no doubt. That is what business is... But the dishonesty of their involvement with FDA as "accrediting" agency is of much safety concern--wolf policing the hen house. Thanks for sharing this info, Lαrα.
kilg0retr0ut and Butiki address the quality of life issue from one direction, and willvape from another. Sometimes we just need relief, even with some serious risk. Anxiety over what is supposed to be a helpful med is not a good thing, and may serve to inform our decision to try to continue using a med.
Good point wavewolf,I dont take any meds for the nerve pain other than regular painkillers for other issues but i had an option, I would choose cannabis.
I created a post some time back that discussed the use of medical marijuana and how the pharmaceutical companies along with the government were doing their very best to prevent Marijuana being used as an option.
Pot is no magic cure all. It may work for some, not all.
I would rather get relief from Lyrica than do jail time, as Pot is illegal in my state, they are trailing it in NSW and Vic I believe but not here. And the side effects of pot can be very devastating as well.
