hi i.m a physio and working with SCI people in Bangladesh. recently i,m doing a research on ''scarf(dopatta) strangulation injury causing SCI''. in Indian subcontinent like Bangladesh this types of injury is not uncommon specially when they traveling through motor bike or auto-rickshaw. if anyone have any experience or information related with this type of injury please fell free to share with me. you can also mail me in shoyeb pt@gmail.com
Hi kazi,is this happening due to the scarf becoming caught on something and fracturing/injuring the vertebrae and from that the spinal cord becomes damaged?
yah Lαrα, exactly that things happen in this injury. south Asian country its a common practice in women to wear averagely 1m long scarf(dopatta/urna) around upper body. if one part of it caught in a moving wheel like rickshaw, food crasher than this terrible injury happen

It sounds like there needs to be awareness promoted in the country, this is an injury so easily avoided. Can the government not restrict these scarves being worn whilst using riding. What do you mean by 'food crasher'
kazi, I would expect that it's like any other spinal cord injury but as Lαrα has mentioned, people need to be better educated about the risks of wearing loose clothing when driving/riding in certain vehicles.
Before you mentioned this kazi,, I wouldn't have even considered SCI resulting from this? Just out of curiosity, what is the main factor causing Spinal Cord Injury in India, do you have any statistics?
I've taken a look around the net and this occurrence seems it is becoming a recognized important health risk and is referred to as 'Long scarf syndrome.
I have found two sources that are of two separate incidents of two teenage girls who died from this cause and each obtained cervical Spinal Cord Injuries.
I would rather not add the websites to the board openly as they each have graphic and upsetting images so I can message you with them. You may know of them already but you have them anyway then.
Just for other's reading this, one girl was riding a Rickshaw motorcycle and the other was riding in a cart that was pulled by a bull, each had their scarves caught in the wheel.
i can give you some idea about causes of SCI in Bangladesh, hear main cause is fall from tree and fall while carrying heavy object over head, RTA, dive in shallow attack, bull attack. before my initiative Scarf strangulation was not consider as a cause, they grossly mention it as RTA, because it strangulation occur mainly during RTA. Thankyou for explaining kazi, you are doing great with your research, sounds like the awareness that you can potentially bring with this will help save lives and injuries!
kazi, you are making a real difference among SCI where you are working. RTA (road traffic accident?) is also a major cause of SCI here in USA, but the other causes seem particular to life where you live. Perhaps some sort of device to contain the length of the scarf, rather than try to change a cultural tradition? Even a decorative short pole, that the scarf can be secured around, would work so that there are not loose ends. And it could be quickly and simply undone at end of ride, and pole stored between uses. I'm thinking of a figure-eight type wraparound.
Figure 8 may be a good solution. another dangerous think that pulled me to do this study are most of them are bellow 15 year school going children. Beside clothing types of vehicle that lead a chance of scarf strangulation may be another factor. until now i,ve found a particular vehicle rlated with this issue. we called it battery power auto rickshaw. Lαrα, DJ, wavewolf,
kazi, what I had in mind is a short (10-12in/20.5-30.5cm) dowel that scarf could be wrapped around in a figure 8 very quickly and easily, tucking end in to secure it (like women do with very long hair). Can hang behind or in front of you while riding, not get tangled in anything. Even if scarf is silky material, winding it and tucking end in should secure it. Light cotton scarf (common) would not come apart at all. I tried to find a picture, but couldn't.
You are most welcome. What I like about this idea is that you are not trying to change the cultural expression, just reducing risk of injury while riding. Unwinding the scarf and stashing the dowel for repeated use is fast, and dowel can be carved and oiled or painted to look nice. My grandmother was born in Bengal area, so I know the type of scarf that is worn. I sometimes worn one when I lived with her as a child (in the USA), feeling elegant and modest, and had very long hair which I braided to my head (woven in) so to not get it caught in my very lively activities! From very young, I loved working with my grandfather and happily climbed ladders and ran electrical wire assisting him in his business. He asked my grandmother to braid my hair for safety. My childhood was quite unusual for USA, but with them was most happy time.
