As a quad I typically have a low blood pressure in general which gets even lower when I stand which I imagine is normal for anyone that doesn't stand much. I also have extremely high blood pressure occasionally due to autonomic dysreflexia (AD). Thankfully I've never passed out from low blood pressure or had to go to hospital due to high blood pressure. Has and of you have this happen? How do you manage your blood pressure? I carry nifedipine with me incase of extremely high BP and don't really need anything for low blood pressure. For those that don't know about nifedipine you can read up on it here: www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a684028.html
This is one thing us lower level injured are very fortunate that we don't have to deal with. I know what it has been like for you DJ and how you feel when you have bad AD and it isnt pleasant
AD and the blood pressure is ok when managed but a very serious complication.
DJ and Lαrα, I didn't know about AD until recently and it seems very serious and one apparently has to know what triggers it and try to avoid it. I read that sexual activity increases the risk of AD, so that is always a concern
theone, you are correct to say sexual activity can trigger AD although not everyone will experience it. It is important to consider the potential for this to happen when participating in sexual activity with your partner. Having stand by meds will be a good idea
Lαrα, what a way to kill the mood, lol I am kidding of course as health comes first... What medications are you talking of, blood pressure meds? I'd like to research more about it, exactly how it manifests itself. I read in some of your post, immediate remedies such as stop activity, sit up, etc.
theone, autonomic dysreflexia is indeed a very serious condition and could be life threatening. Sexual activity (ejaculation) is a cause of AD for some people but I haven't experienced it myself. AD typically occurs for people with a T5-T6 injury up. Check out this post on AD if you haven't done so already
It's strange, before my injury I suffered from high blood pressure, very high blood pressure, but since my injury it's been just about perfect. Can't work that one out.

Butiki..LOL nothing makes sense with all the Cauda Equina Syndrome and Spinal cord injury stuff but makes a nice change when something works out well....bonus!

hello when i do my exersise some time wife help me stand but i almost fall down ! when i was go physiotharpy i use frame and stand and fall down. my bp verry low so it is hard for me to stand !
I am a quadriplegic(c5/6/7) and I used to suffer from AD much more often than I do now. I have on occasion had it act up during sexual activity. I usually just try to find out the cause and stop it. I have ended up in the ER twice due to blood pressure rising. On a general basis my blood pressure is around 82-92 and has gone up as high as 175 during AD. When I first learned about AD I was terrified however as I have grown a custom to the random attacks it has become not as scary even though I understand the dangers of letting it go too far.
I'm glad to hear that the episodes of AD has settled down. Do you know what they main causes were? For me it's my bladder. Thankfully I haven't had any serious AD lately but I will be prepared if it does ever happen again.
its good that with experience you have learnt to deal with ithe AD and prevent worse attacks. The unknown is always frightening but it sounds like you deal with this very sensibly and practically
The main causes were usually bladder or positioning in my chair but mostly my bladder. The unknown was definitely the scariest part of the whole thing.
