I haven't stopped by in a while but I am still fighting and trying to improve.
Yesterday I watched a video of a father saying his injured son was basically growing into his wheelchair. A sad description but a very true one that made me think. Of course sometimes that is our only option. I've been trying to figure out a way to get on and off the floor without much assistance for a while, haven't quite found it yet.
But was thinking today, I'm in my chair the majority of the day, even exercising from it (better than nothing) so I am growing into it in a sense.
But just think if I could get on the floor on a regular basis, out of my chair. And start trying to move in ways that I don't in my chair. I'm thinking of what if I started trying to turn / roll from side to side? Not easy but I know I can do it and imagine if I practiced it regularly how much it would improve and get easier.
And what else would be possible to practice on the floor? A lot I imagine but I want to try find and focus on a few basic movements / exercises that will strengthen my core and improve my mobility and practice and train those few things daily and as I improve it will open up other exercise possibilities. But I'm not sure what those few things should be, please feel free to share with me your thoughts and ideas.
In a wheelchair all day, of course if we could choose we would much rather be on our feet. But if we can't do that right yet perhaps getting out of our wheelchair onto the floor will help more than we think.

Thanks for checking in Ian, I had no doubt you'd still be fighting to be the best you can be. I really don't know your abilities and limits so I really can't offer ideals on floor exercises, but what you said makes sense, any movement is a plus. Take Care
Hey abacoian, glad to see you back! I think it would be very beneficial getting on the floor and doing exercises from there. Like you said, you'll be able to do exercises that aren't possible to do in the chair. I've heard that trying crawling is a really good exersize. You can also get some nice stretches in while you're down there. Will you have someone that can help you get down and back?
only my wife to help me on and off the floor. But I can't ask her to do that daily. If I want to do it regularly I must find a not so difficult way, there has to be a way. For now I will try to figure out some good trunk exercises that I can work on while in bed. Thank you guys
abacoian do you have a ceiling or hoyer lift at home? If so, you might be able to use that to get on and off the floor and that way it'll be less physical work for your wife!

I have gone to a couple of auctions that had lifts and other equipment. You can get a good price on them because there were few bidders, just a thought.

Interesting. If you can't find a used lift for cheap, a winch sounds like a great idea!

Thank you for your help and never give up. Ian
Abacoian, floor exercises can be beneficial for you
that's what I'm thinking Keith, I'm thinking they could very well be a game changer. I just can't find a way to get there and back, but I know there must be a way. In the meantime, when I do find a way there, do you have any exercise suggestions?
