I Googled just now and see that you aren't alone in this problem, tj.
"Doctors need to increase their awareness Andrea Cooper, 52, of Phoenix, Md., who suffers from fibromyalgia and spinal degeneration, has felt the stigma of narcotic use. "The last pain specialist I had, I just hated it. There were signs up all over the office about rules and limitations. All about being suspicious of the patients. Not the way medicine ought to be practiced. I found it insulting." Adds Jan, 45, a chronic pain sufferer in Boulder, Colo.: "I think doctors have to be able to distinguish between the people who can handle it and those who can't—and help the people who can.""

No delboy, but thanks for asking. I do have the burning and the pins and needles yes, but the symptoms go much further than that. I get severe leg cramps, I have bolts of electricity shock me almost anywhere throughout my body, I have stabbing pains that can literally knock me off of my feet, I have many of the bowel and bladder issues as many on here do, insomnia effects many people who have Arachnoiditis also, I have muscle spasms, my legs kick and twitch but mostly when I lie down at night, there are times that I loose control of my legs and they have no feeling, the other day I added a new thing to my reportar as I had a whole body spasm that actually threw my glasses off and caused my bottom plate of my dentures to fly out of my mouth, and also get the feelings of bugs crawling under my skin all over my body. If not using my chair even around the house I fall down frequently. Plus when the neurosurgeon did the MRI they found an Aortic aneurysm also, it is at 5.2 centimeters àt 5.5 they will have to put in a Stent about a foot long to take care of it, if I don't do it then it becomes just a matter of time until it ruptures. Normal size for the Aorta is 3 centimeters. And I have very severe pain in my back and legs at all times, plus I am unable to feel hot or cold in my feet , my legs swell up from my knees down also. But other than all of that, I am in pretty good Shape, for the shape I'm in. And my shoe was untied and I tripped over a rock because the sun was in my eyes. Sorry, I have to find fun where I can these days, even if it is sometimes comes òut as sarcasm. PLEASE don't take this personal delboy as I kind of just got off track on a rant.
Your a good man TJ. of course i won't take this personal, The symptoms you describe are very similar to the neuro pain i have. don't know about the level of pain , in your case it must be more acute. Wishing you luck with the pain management programme.
Just another update, 9 hours of sleep in the last 8 days. I go to the pain management clinic at the University of Iowa Hospital this next Friday, we will see if I even go back next time if they do nothing this time. I have already been to their shrink and was told that I am NOT CRAZY !!! We shall see.
So its not just me that cant seem to sleep, before my accident i was the best sleeper, now I'm lucky to get 2-3 hours a night. Right now for instance ive had 2 hours sleep in 48 hours. Mostly its pain that keeps me awake too, although i cant seem to "switch off" my mind is in over drive i have tried meditation, medication, nothing seems to make a difference.
TJ you are an inspiration. You don't gripe or moan. Your posts are harrowing to read and I can understand your sarcasm. I so admire your willingness to make little jokes where you can. Life is not dealing you a good hand. I wish I had a magic wand that I could wave to take away the horrible symptoms you suffer. Just when I think I am suffering I read your posts and it puts things into perspective. Alena, I have never written to you before. I too have one of those minds that will not switch off. I dare not think about music before going to sleep, for songs will go round and around my head. Sometimes my thoughts are quite frantic. I have tried medication but sleeping pills or diazepam make me feel brain-dead the next day. I guess I have learned to accept the way I am. There is much more than I can tell but it gets personal. Anyway good luck to you both
hey everyone with sleep issues, and I mean serious sleep issues. I have recently discovered that cannabis helps immensely with my sleep issues. I was avg around 2-3 hrs before(2 months ago), but since I have started using cannabis and an external cath I have raised my avg to about 6 hrs per night. much better and I feel good and gaining strength since the up in avg sleep. I also take a few naps during the day, so I probably am getting close to 8 hrs now. so with sleep issues, bladder issues, pain and spasticity have made my new life so much better since I started using cannabis, everyone with an sci should seriously consider using cannabis to improve your life.

This is what I'm dealing with to some degree. I call the pins and needles, cold, and pressure normal neuropathy. The shocks, stabs, buzzers, charley horses are a bonus I call neuropathy +.

Add me to the list. And yes, none of my doctors step up to help do anything. I'm going off Gabapentin as a probable cause for my adrenal insufficiency. I created a new thread about that.
Insomnia is another symptom Gabapentin can cause. Be interested to see if that goes away... I've tried the pooping myself out. If I overdue it I sleep the first night but my spasticity roars me down and then I'm too figity to sleep. It's like we all need to implement the army man crawl if we want to narrowly escape our problems. Ask Google for each medication if it causes insomnia. Print out hits and give to doc. Maybe giving the doctor a hand out will help? Works for me.

Fascinating, especially since sleepiness is a prime 'side-effect' of gabapentin.
Again last night I went into figit mode at 12 midnight. Why always at midnight??? I'm not eager to dump gabapentin as the symptoms it masks are totally distracting. I reduced from 1500 mg/day last year to 1200/mg/day, but I don't think that is enough for relief of side-effects.
I also remember that many things cause insomnia for us. I am more vulnerable to it just being older, and being less active.
Funny how when you are a kid you think your health will always be good. Unless it isn't, of course.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...

Those nerve pains are awful! I suffered from them too, and they kept me up. Have you tried taking Gabapentin or Lyrica? I am taking alpha lipoic acid, I get that without a prescription, and it prevents that pain for me.

I had a really hard time sleeping for several years after surgery, a discectomy. I had been a non drinker, but I found if I had a small of wine, or a cooler, I could sleep. And finally I didn't even need that anymore.
