Add me to the list. And yes, none of my doctors step up to help do anything. I'm going off Gabapentin as a probable cause for my adrenal insufficiency. I created a new thread about that.
Insomnia is another symptom Gabapentin can cause. Be interested to see if that goes away... I've tried the pooping myself out. If I overdue it I sleep the first night but my spasticity roars me down and then I'm too figity to sleep. It's like we all need to implement the army man crawl if we want to narrowly escape our problems. Ask Google for each medication if it causes insomnia. Print out hits and give to doc. Maybe giving the doctor a hand out will help? Works for me.
Fascinating, especially since sleepiness is a prime 'side-effect' of gabapentin.
Again last night I went into figit mode at 12 midnight. Why always at midnight??? I'm not eager to dump gabapentin as the symptoms it masks are totally distracting. I reduced from 1500 mg/day last year to 1200/mg/day, but I don't think that is enough for relief of side-effects.
I also remember that many things cause insomnia for us. I am more vulnerable to it just being older, and being less active.
Funny how when you are a kid you think your health will always be good. Unless it isn't, of course.

There are alternative medications that work like Gabapentin. I will share what my doctors had to say. Endocrinologist: I have a love/hate relationship with Gabapentin. I would never choose to prescribe it. It's a nasty drug with too many side affects. But I have patients that say it works for them so in those cases I prescribe it. Spinal Pain Management Doctor: If weaning off Gabapentin doesn't work, I have alternative medications. I told him I was reading that Gabapentin is like a catchers mitt. The brain sends pain signals and Gabapentin blocks them. It can't eliminate them, more like defuses them. Alternative meds suppress the brain to create the pain signals. Like Gabapentin, can't eliminate, just defuse. I told my PM doctor I've noticed brain surpressing kind are more expensive and my insurance hasn't been paying for new technology medications. He said with you they will because the AI fits and you would have to take something else to give your pituitary a chance to wake up. As for my insomnia, I'm going into a new pattern. I was on 2,700mg per day. (300mg cap x3 900mg × 3 times per day). That sounds like a lot, but breakout pain is like blocking labor pain as it comes from the same part of the brain that creates labor. It is capable of the most destruction pain imaginable. I am now down to 2am =600mg, 1eve =300mg,1bedtime =300mg total 1,200mg. I just started weaning am every other day 1. I'm going really slow and taking it easy because a drug change this powerful is super stressful on the system and me with AI makes it more troublesome. My insomnia is now changed to sometimes falling asleep watching TV or can't stay up later than 1:30. I sleep all night and some mornings so tired I go back to bed getting up at 10-11. I like that pattern better than 3 in the morning or up all night. We have to remember I have the added exhaustion from AI. As I suggested before, research your medications for insomnia and bring the info to your doctor. The Gabapentin is a heavy hitter, so the doc may not want to start with that one unless your pattern suggests otherwise. Jot down what you remember and chart a couple of weeks before the appointment. Let me know what happens.

I think that gabapetin is prescribed because it's a cheaper medication. I hated the stuff. Yes, I had bad bad insomnia when I took it. I woke up at 3am every night. Someone suggested Alpha Lipoic Acid for nerve pain. I have not noticed any side affects. You do need to wean yourself off the gaba.
Here's one person's experience with Gabapetin. Yes, this is what's called "an·ec·do·tal (adjective) (of an account) not necessarily true or reliable, because based on personal accounts rather than facts or research." But nevertheless, it's a well-written comment. He starts by stating the dosages he's taken, then launches into his concerns.
Potential Long Term Effects Of Gabapentin Adam3355 "...I've used it a few times recently (in July, just a few weeks ago) when the pain really flared up, thinking it would only have minimal side effects, but it has resulted in continual severe depression and dark thoughts even though I haven't taken any in two weeks. I took it occassionally because I thought the depression was predominantely from the chronic pain, but now I realize the gabapentin was the root of it. I'm terrified because I know the drug has long since left my system but I can't shake the side effects. Doctors and psychologists won't listen to me. They say I'm just depressed and it isn't the medication, but I'm positive it is. The pain is finally improving, I'm going back to school, and things are looking up. But there is this unshakable auora that is plauging me. No matter how hard I distract myself and push through there's this cloud that impares my ability to emotionally and physical function (feelings of detachment, separation, depression, and some suicidal thoughts). Words come slower, it's harder to focus, memory is very dull. I wasn't concered within the first few days, but it's been a few weeks now and I'm alarmed that it doesn't seem to be improving. Do the side effects ever go away... How long does it take and what can catalyze the healing process? Is it possible to incur permanent damage from a low dosage, or does it take months to heal. Can anyone explain the biomechanics behind how gabapentin can affect patients weeks after usage. " patient.info/forums/discuss/potential-long-term-effects-of-gabapentin-272189

I had not been taking gabapentin for more than 6 or so months, and my head cleared soon after stopping it. I have not had any more major dental problems.
Hi TJ, how are you now? Did you have to consult any other doctor?
Beside of of PCP, I've only been to a pain clinic that told me that my Dr had been doing everything right. Unless I would let them put in a nuerostimulator. But he then told me , when I asked him what the odds were on it working for me. He said that it normally works for about 60 % of his patient's, and with my particular set of problems that the odds were about half of that. So I let him know in no uncertain terms that no one would ever touch my back again if the had the word Dr in front of their name.

I'm weaning off Gabapentin. See my post about it causing adrenal insufficiency. I was taking 2,700mg per day,now at 900mg per day. Dosing is a.m., suppertime, bedtime. It's going well. I decided to lay low activity wise. Per my doctor, the body has to create it's own receptors for the void. It's a huge chemical exchange. I figured the stress of the exchange was enough for my body and a normal day might be too much. It's working. I started by taking 1 out every other day out at bedtime. Then eve, then a.m. If I had a busy week, I don't change. I got pushback going 1 a day in the morning so I'm going to stay where I am and ramp up activity and take me for a test drive. I can tell my body is still working hard with changes when I'm tired.

I have adrenal insufficiency. Pituitary and glands are normal so medical suppression makes sense. I'm a good fit to the study profile. I sure hope it works for my pituitary to start working again. Gabapentin is a love hate relationship. There are drugs that tackle the pain from a different angle. My doctor said if I can't get off all the way, he'll put me on one of those.
How many of us on here suffer from insomnia and get very little help from our Dr's for it? Here I am setting up outside on my front porch through a severe thunderstorm. No sleep again tonight. The last time that I slept I had been awake for 96 hours, then slept for 3 hours and have now been awake again for 76 hours so far. Constant pain, no pain medication, no relief, no sleep medication. I am in the third stage of arachnoiditis, so if I have read correctly that means no relief. I know that one time when I had a visit to the emergency room they gave me morphine, I wish that came in a six pack. It sure took the edge off and made the pain bearable. I at least felt better about the pain. I go to physical therapy 3 times a week and it doesn't seem to be doing anything. They send a report once a month to my Dr and for all the many months that I have been going there , there has been no improvement only losing more joint movement and also more muscle atrophy. Well anyway this has been my rant on this subject, I will be good to go for awhile again now.
Hello
I was wondering if you think a communication device at night will help in order to ask for help?
