Question for my fellow quads or anyone with spinal cord injury who deals with spasticity. I can’t stand this question but I have to ask. Who knows about marijuana and spasticity? Does it help with spasticity in sci as some state?
Apparently so. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/6978699 Arch Phys Med Rehabil. 1982 Mar;63(3):116-8. Cannabis effect on spasticity in spinal cord injury. Malec J, Harvey RF, Cayner JJ. Abstract A study was done to examine the perceived effects of cannabis on spasticity of spinal cord injured persons. Data compiled from 43 questionnaires of spinal cord injured persons suggested the following: 1) spinal cord injured persons reported decreased spasticity with marijuana use; 2) present use of marijuana correlated positively with past use; and 3) the person's reference or peer group contributed significantly to current use. The study suggests the need to examine the relationship between measurable and reported changes in spasticity.
They need to do more research. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK425767/ “Whiting et al. (2015) searched for studies examining the efficacy of cannabinoids for spasticity due to MS or paraplegia. They identified 11 studies that included patients with MS and 3 that included patients with paraplegia caused by spinal cord injury. None of the studies in patients with paraplegia caused by spinal cord injury were reported as full papers or included sufficient data to allow them to be included in pooled estimates... 4-7(b) There is insufficient evidence to support or refute the conclusion that cannabinoids are an effective treatment for spasticity in patients with paralysis due to spinal cord injury.”
If you have multiple sclerosis or Huntington's, and you’re an animal, you’re in business! www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4911937/ Medical Marijuana for Epilepsy? Published online 2016 Apr 1. “This diminishes neuronal hyperexcitability and may attenuate seizure frequency. It also ameliorates the spasticity and tremors of multiple sclerosis and Huntington’s disease in animal models.7“
Peter had an appointment with his Neurologist yesterday (Saturday! - the NHS is playing catch up with weekend clinics - whole other subject!). At the end of the appointment we asked what his thoughts were on legalising cannabis for some medical conditions here in the UK. He said that in his experience cannabis (with the THC included) helped with pain and spasticity but not with fatigue. Here in the UK the only cannabis based drug is Sativex (https://www.mstrust.org.uk/a-z/sativex-nabiximols) and this can only be prescribed to people with MS related spasticity not SCI related spasticity. However he is firmly of the opinion that it will help with almost all spasticity and told us that some of his SCI patients source it through "dodgy cafes" in a town nearby and it "almost always" brings some relief. He fears that in spite of the recent publicity it will still be some years still before any cannabis based drugs will be available to SCI patients. Peter is currently trying cannabis oil with the THC removed which is legal in the UK. It works for some but too early to tell for him yet as it takes a few weeks to be effective apparently. He is also considering trying a vape with CBD oil as we have heard good things about that also and claims to be more "immediate" than oil under the tongue. If you do a search you will find many old threads about cannabis use.
it does help but doesn't totally relieve it. it does so much more then just relieve spasticity, it promotes sleep, promotes appetite, calms mental stresses, mood enhancer, sexual function enhancer. all these issues affect many with sci.
I use both weed and baclofen. The weed (I live in California) is great for sleep and general relaxation but when I tried to reduce my baclofen I went back to being woken up with spasms. I have to say it does not help ME that much with spasticity, though it helps some.
Medical Cannabis is great alternative medicine, specially SCI patients with chronic pain and/or insomnia! CBD is also a great alternative, gives you the same relief as marijuana but without the HIGH
I take kratom. From what I read, it isn’t nearly so effective as marijuana,... but it’s legal in most States, including Texas. I order it through the mail. It helps my spasms a lot. If my clonus is keeping me awake, a half teaspoon of kratom with water will take effect in about 20 minutes, and I’ll go to sleep.

I am a 39 year year complete quad and don't use anything but the weed for medication. I wait until after work to use it but when I do it totally gets rid of my leg and stomach spasms. As was said above it will also help with overall mood, dealing with stress, sleep, appetite, but some strains will make you very horny. I am currently smoking a bag that makes me want to get with any female I come in contact with. It's not legal in my state but it is so readily available it might as well be. It's like a warm blanket enveloping you and telling you everything is going to be ok. I enjoy go to www.leafly.com and reading all the reviews of the all the many strains out there. I'm sure there's one for you you'll like and will take care of your spasms.

RSO works better than anything that I've tried including Baclofin, unfortunately such things make me an outlaw where I live.
Ever feel like dying, ever feel alone, Ever feel like cryin', lost child in a store, Ever feel life pushing, shoving you away, Ever feel like breaking down, funeral in the rain Feel like slipping away
I was put on a cannabis trial at a leading spinal injured centre in England. The drug I was taking was called Nabalone, which had both CBD and THC. Although it made me high as a kite, and was brilliant for pain, it did very little for my spasms. I can categorically state that even high doses of this drug did not do one single thing to help my spasms. I can also state that it was brilliant for pain. This year I have grown my own plant which is doing very well. The idea is to make my own CBD oil. I am not a smoker, so I don't want to inhale it. Could make some biscuits, too.
Fantastic that you are able to grow a plant, mikeq. I’ve never had marijuana, and Texas is a super-miserable place to try to get any legally. I lean toward believing that “natural” is better and better for you than the processed “weaponized” versions. Typical of a Brit to say you’ll make “biscuits”. I think that “biscuits” can roughly translate to American as “cookies”, right? Anyway, Americans generally make marijuana Brownies. Here’s one recipe. www.ncsm.nl/english/information-for-patients/make-weed-brownies
US biscuits mostly resemble 'Scones' in the uk, though we eat them as snacks with maybe butter and fruit jam.
The US biscuit as in biscuits and gravy seems like alien food to us!
On the original question it does help a little, some strains more than others. Ones with a bit of THC as well as CBD mostly. Doesn't have to be modern US super strong, though I enjoy a vape. Anything to ease the journey's ok in my book.
