Hello All Been quiet on here recently so thought I would pop in to say hello and ask how everyone is doing? Here in the UK we are very much in lockdown still and around the one year mark for when we all started paying attention to Covid19. It's taken it's toll and I know many of us have had a really hard year. I miss my family who I cannot see in lockdown (apart from online). I lost my Mum and Stepdad just before Christmas and 3 of my 4 siblings went down with it too - though they are thankfully recovered now. BUT - the vaccination program is under way and here in the UK we are getting on fast and furiously with it. Peter and I are in priority groups (me as his carer) and we both had the Astra Zenica (Oxford) vaccinations last Saturday. I thought I would ask on here if any others have been vaccinated yet and what, if any, side effects they have had? I had a bit of a dodgy tummy - nothing worth mentioning really. But Peter got a weird nervous system reaction. A few hours after the vaccination he started getting increased spasticity and also what he describes as "zingers" through his upper body (electrical type nerve pain). He was also dizzy and unbalanced. He had a fall which was not much fun as to make matters more "interesting" I have broken my wrist and 2 days out of plaster. Anyhow - we managed to get him up and no real harm done. Lasted for about 24 hrs and now he is totally back to his normal. I was interested to know if this is his wonky CNS responding to the virus or a side effect they haven't documented yet? Has anyone else with an SCI had this side effect?. Once again - sending love and positive vibes out to all as I know this time has been even more difficult for those who have extra reasons to find life challenging at the moment Namaste 🙏
Hi. I was wondering that too. I had my first vaccine- pfizer. About 8 hrs after I had very bad spasms in my legs. Couldn't straighten my leg, had to take muscle relaxer. Lasted a couple hours then fine. I actually didn't even make connection to vaccine but in talking with my physical therapist, she noted it. For most people it tends to give muscle aches but because our nervous systems are overly sensitive we feel it more.

Think you might be right Kate. We told Peter's doc about his reaction and he noted it but didn't think it was of any real interest as it was already over by the time we spoke to him. But it would be useful if it was mentioned to someone with a compromised nervous system that they might get this sort of reaction. We will know what to expect for the second vaccination
I had the first round of the Moderna vaccine at the end of January. 24-hours of chills and cold sweats. 5-days of nausea and weakness. Second round at the end of February.
I had a mild reaction to the vaccine (chills, headache, etc.) but the leg pains went on for hours. I didn't know what was going on. I was out of contact for weeks due to a shoulder infection. That was something I never heard of. I had surgery to remove part of the bone and then 3 weeks in rehab hospital
I had my vaccine #1 2 days ago. Yesterday I suffered a mild headache and severe spasticity. Acetaminophen and a bit of clonazepam set me right. Today the spasticity is bothersome and my breathing is impaired. Yuck.
I got the Moderna shot in Jan. Days 4 and 5 I felt poorly. Headache and no energy. Feb 11th got the second shot. The only side effect was injection site soreness and my muscles in my arm jumped about for 2 days.
Thanks all - sounds like a greater chance of people with an already compromised nervous system getting some extra spasticity. But I guess that it goes with the territory - anything that makes a person with spasticity uncomfortable is like to trigger extra spasticity. Good luck with 2nd vaccinations and hopefully the reactions will be smaller or non existent 2nd time around. Small price to pay though for the extra security.
Had my second, actually was easier then the first. Prepared this time. Hydrated and took valium at first muscle twitch and cont to take it for next 48 hrs just in case. Arm sore and mild stomach upset but not the horrible spasms this time. Good Luck all.
I'm pretty chuffed to say, here in Queensland, Australia, we are under no lockdown the most recent mask mandate ended yesterday after a scare some weeks ago of 8 or so cases, luckily it never developed into anything more.
The boy had the Pfizer vax in early March, I was a little nervous about it but he was fine... He had phantom fly symptoms for a couple of days, the first day he was laid flat but had a slightly elevated temp (37.2), muscular aches and pains, but nothing else. By end of the second day he was through it.. I am wondering if he's going to have the same happen with the second dose.
I entirely missed this thread, apologies for not replying sooner.

I got the Pfizer shot 1 was at 10:00am and I got tired a few hours earlier than I normally do and my shot site was sore for about 24 hours. The 2nd shot was at 11:00am and my arm was sore for about 24 hrs then i felt nauseous 48 later and took a couple Tums which took care of it. I feel so much better emotionally and psychologically having gotten the vaccine it was worth whatever discomforts that it came with.

Thanks for this. The emotional lift the vaccinations give you is amazing! We have both had our 2nd shot now (Astra Zenica) and the second one produced no side effects at all for either of us. The mental boost is tremendous and we feel mucg safer - but we are trying to still be cautious. Things are opening up here in the UK now and we are able to do much more now. Hope you are all staying safe and well xx
