Hey everyone, interested in home grown meds and herbs
I was thinking about creating a new thread, but I can also paste this here:
Im doing a lot of research on herbs lately, mostly for smoking (vaporising, to be exact). I found some (supposedly) great herbs for our nervous system, rejuvenating and nerve damage! Has any of you heard or tried goru kola, brahmi (bacopa manniera), Scullcap (Scutellaria Lateriflora), damiana tea, Lion's Mane mushroom,... ?
Thankyou so much for sharing Europedude! I can imagine the time you have taken to find out all the information..so sharing this is great...Its actually looks very interesting too.
Magnesium is a very important nutrient to maintain holistic health. Having the appropriate levels of magnesium in the body will improve sleep, mental health, muscle function (strength and flexibility), as well as decrease the breakdown of bones.
Sleep is the most important time to recover from stress and injury, including that of the spinal cord. When magnesium is deficient, the sleep regulating hormone melatonin is disturbed. This happens because exogenous magnesium has been found to increase the activity of serotonin N-acetyltransferase, an enzyme in the pathway for melatonin synthesis. Keeping a balanced intake of magnesium will aid in the quality of sleep and help maintain a positive Mental health outlook.
Following a spinal cord injury, psychological problems such as depression and anxiety, ones mental health, can worsen. Serotonin, a hormone that relaxes the nervous system and elevates moods, is dependent on magnesium. Serotonin is produced from an essential amino acid (protein unit), called tryptophan, obtained from food and then converted to Serotonin under the influence of vitamin B6 (Pyridoxine) and magnesium. Therefore, if there isn’t a sufficient level of magnesium in the body, the conversion of tryptophan to the “feel good” hormone, serotonin doesn’t happen as efficiently as when there is the right amount of magnesium present.
Following a spinal cord injury, the body experiences a decrease of muscle mass in areas of the body that are not being used. Likewise, there is a dramatic decrease in bone density. Fortunately Magnesium also helps fix calcium. Along with this, magnesium also suppresses the hormone called parathyroid, which enhances the breakdown of bone.
People who have had a spinal cord injury also tend to get muscle tightness, spasticity and soreness. Magnesium counteracts the effect of calcium, which tightens the muscles, and loosens them, it increases the absorption of potassium which is critical for muscle function, and it also decreases pain by blocking pain receptors in the brain and nervous system.
Not only can magnesium be obtained by eating magnesium rich foods, or taking supplements, magnesium can also be absorbed through epsom salt baths (magnesium sulphate).
Thanks for sharing isabelmg, great info! Magnesium sounds a useful supplement. I have just started a detox but ive also started to take so many additional supplements and its surprising the difference it makes and im sleeping better
