DJ, richard, Butiki, do you guys use straight catheters that you have to lube from a tube of lube, or do you use a separate packet of lube each time? The reason I ask is because the cause of my monthly UTI's was that the tube of lube got contaminated, so every time I cathed, I was putting bacteria in myself! That's why my super-awesome, best-in-the-state-- in my opinion, anyways-- urologist switched me to the Speedicath Compact/Compact Plus. There is no lube needed and you don't touch the catheter part at all! Best catheters ever... well, they're matched for first place with the MTG closed system catheters. Not needing a toilet to cath into is awesome for camping.
Hi Knight, this is what I use, a new catheter and a new sachet of lube every time I pee, I have NEVER used the same catheter or lube since I started self cathertizeing over two years ago, I think to use either one twice is asking for problems. But I still managed to cop a UTI.
Hard to say. When I get concerned about my bacterial count I step up the water and cranmax. The neurogenic bladder that is managed with catheter or has persistent residual urine in bladder will almost always test positive, at least it does for me. I was taking antibiotics far to often. Haven't taken any for UTI recently so maybe it helps but that's a "sample study of one" . Urologist at Lyndhurst advises to only treat if there's blood in urine or high temp. Wondering what do others use as a benchmark for taking antibiotics? Richard
Excellent question! My urologist advised that "standard" treatment of UTI with antibiotic for SCI patients is when there is excessive pain/burning/itching, hematuria (blood in urine), or fever above 99F (assuming normal is 98.6). But I am on immune suppressing meds for disease, so she may take more aggressive approach with me. She agrees with what you wrote, "The neurogenic bladder that is managed with catheter or has persistent residual urine in bladder will almost always test positive." She called it "colonized", and if asymptomatic, can be monitored rather than treated for most people.
Knight I use a tube of lube but maybe that's why I get my UTI's once in a while. I'll look into the pre-lubricated catheters and see if they make a difference.
That's interesting wavewolf. I know sugar is bad for the bladder but I've heard that orange juice has helped a few people I've spoken to. They have a cup of orange juice everyday and rarely get UTI's. Maybe it depends on the person!
Wondering what you guys do if anything inbetween catheterizations. Hard to stay dry. On ditropan now. Tried Botox 3 times, very limited result. Wear condom drainage and catheterizing through condom. This obviously brings in lots of bacteria. Also tried KIK expander and found that impractical. I'm too afraid to leave the house without a lefbag on. I've done it years ago. Lots of incontience. Any ideas?

How frequently are you catheterising richard? If your bladder is becoming full you may leak...and are you emptying completely when you catheter?
DJ. I just read your thread on UTIs. I should try the flush. Tried couple years ago. What fun we have. Lara. I catheterize every 2-3 hours. I have small volume 250ml lately(usually 300) and I get real uncomfortable when full so I do a lot of caths. If I had a bit more volume I'd go without condom and legbag. Argh
I don't cath, because with flaccid bladder (more typical of higher level injuries than mine) I would still leak constantly. So I use pads--much more comfortable than diapers, and easier to change with trousers. You can get them in various absorbancies, so it might keep you from wetting between caths.

Have you tried any other medications? There are a lot. Ditropan stopped working for me, and now I'm on Toviaz and it works great! One 4mg tablet in the morning and I only leak if I forget to cath on time! (every 4-6 hours)
richard, I was told to do bladder flushes from my nurses Lyndhurst at least once a month but I never bothered. I'm still not doing it regularily but I really do think that doing it once or twice a week would help. I also take Ditropan every morning and wear a condom cath throughout the day and all night. I cath every morning and night and was told that it wasn't enough times and that I could be getting the UTI's from not cathing enough. Didn't really make sense to me at first but for a little while I was able to cath 3-4 times a day and it did feel like it helped. I wish I could keep a regular routine but my schedule is always changing so it's not really doable.

You have to think differently . . . is your schedule more important than your lifespan ? AD from a UTI can really spoil your day . . .
DJ.your bladder management is similar to mine. I need a way to cath cleanly preferably without removing the condom cath. It's just not practical. I can cath very frequently. Maybe every 1-2 hours. Difficult to ignore as bladder contraction is uncomfortable and causes mild AD. Would be great to get a condom cath that allows access to clean. Going to book appointment to follow up at Robson Lyndhurst. I got my bowel "fixed" now to work on bladder. Knight. I can't take Toviaz. It's slow release and recent ileostomy makes it contraindicated. Will follow up on flush with Lyndhurst Thank you all for your suggestions.
richard, condom catheters are expensive so it'd be great if you can find a way to cleanly catheterize intermittently without having to change the condom everytime. Definately let us know what Lyndhurst has to say!
