I know TENS units are used for many things-- pain, muscle stimulation, keeping bone density, and achieving erections-- and I was wondering if anybody used them for spastic muscles. I tried it for pain in my back one day, and it did nothing as it was bone pain.
Let's talk about this nifty little invention. What do you use it for, how well it works, and how it works.
I was never really told anything about it until I talked to my physical therapist and my boyfriend's mom (she suffers from a degenerative disc disease) about my pain. I would like to learn more.
I've used one at rehab with my OT to see if we could strengthen my hand grip and we able to close my fingers but not open them. I used an FES bike for my legs a few times and that worked great!
Unfortunately they dont work too well for me. I used one in rehab for pain relief and it didnt help..but i do know they help many people deal with their pain.
I was told that the electrical pulses cause your muscles to contract and relax, therefore, helping preserve some muscle tone. I was wondering if it would help with my tonic muscle spasms. (Tonic muscle spasms are when muscles contract for a period of time where clonic spasms are the jumpy ones.)
used for an Erection ???- ive never heard of this being used for that - I own an TENS/EMS unit - im curious now... but im thinkin im scared to attach the pads to my unit LOL... tell me more pls

Where did you read that jimmyt..ive looked and cant see it? lol
TENS is used to cause white noise in your nerves to overwhelm the pain sensor impulses so your brain will disregard the pain signals as noise. Set to the proper frequency a TENS device can be very helpful to reduce, not remove, pain.
An EMS unit (Some TENS devices have them built in) is for muscle stimulation. Don't try to use them for each other's purposes. It rarely helps.
I currently own a TENS/IFS unit that works much better for nerve pain than the original TENS did. I use it on my neck and lower back at low settings and it takes the edge off enough to allow me to take low doses of narcotics for pain management. The power output on my current TENS goes to 175ma at level 20. I normally use it on level 3.
If a normal TENS doesn't do anything for you try a TENS/IFS and see if that helps. It does for me.
jimmyt, I don't think that'd be a good idea! I can imagine it'd feel like you were pissing on an electric fence (I've never tried but I can only imagine how painful it is)

DJ..so poetically put! You have a magical way with words sometimes, The problem with your imagination is that it wanders too far and has to indulge in the visual image and then more! haha

Lαrα the only reason why I was able to imagine the feeling was because I've seen this video before
Sorry for going off topic Knight, I won't say any more!
