Well I thought i would talk about my impending trip to Canada to visit DJ. I like to think that I am well planned but maybe after I have returned home I can post again and let you know what I learnt and/or forgot lol
So firstly when i booked my flight tickets I made sure that I asked for assistance. I'm sure that mostly all airports provide this service so its a good one to make advantage of.
I arranged travel insurance and managed to get quite a good deal even on a 'pre-existing condition' policy. It definitely pays to look around for a good price, it can be time consuming but very worth the saving.
Medication: I've made sure that I have plenty in at home so that i can take enough with me, plus some extra for an emergency. I plan to keep what i need in my hand luggage and spare amounts in my suitcase. Keep all medication in their original prescribed containers and contact your GP to find out If you need a letter to explain your medication or not.
As i have already had 2 DVT's I made an appointment with my doctor to discuss how i can take the best care of myself to try and prevent developing one during my flight. He has advised that I take an asprin each day for 3 days prior to the flight and then one on the day of the flight, then the same again for the return journey.
He also advised that i wear flight socks to help with the circulation and to get up for a walk every one hour, its good that i pre- booked an aisle seat. I just hope that im not too unsteady on my crutches but im sure I will be fine.
Water, water, water!!....drink lots because its proven that there is a link in dehydration and DVT's so its a no brainer really, just drink plenty.
Check passport is in date! and check if you need a visa to visit the place you plan to go to. British citizens travelling to Canada do not require one so that's at least one good thing I shall add to this soon as I need to talk about self catheterisation and some other stuff!!
Wow Lara! You are so brave, as yet we haven't been on holiday since my injury. I'm looking forward to hearing all about your visit when you return, maybe you could provide us with a daily blog!! lol

Only a few more days Lara, I'm looking forward to the visit! I think you've pretty much got it covered, you've gone above and beyond with the planning but it's better safe than sorry! You'll be fine on the plane and as long as you do and follow what you've posted here, everything will go smooth. I know it's going to be a big thing to do but I'm glad you're taking the initiative to do it.
Well i've just had breakfast and i would have normally just be getting ready for evening...the weather is beautiful but the best thing is that DJ and I are working together on the forum in real time and with each other. We are going to the beach later with his family.....it doesn't get much better than this...plus I seem to have conquered my fear of flying!

Hey, Lara. How was the beach? I flew in to Toronto yesterday and have just come back from a meeting in Burlington. Quite different the weather here than in Vancouver where I'm from.
I am interested on how you managed over such a long flight and what, if anything, you might have done or prepared for differently. My guy is starting to think about traveling in the not too distance future, so it would be great to consider all scenarios of the what if / should haves.
Cath, i will def give some tips about my journey here. I was well prepared but theres still more i could have done to better prepare. I found the journey more manageable than i expected and i was someone who wouldn't fly for being too scared but since my SCI my attitude changed so somewhat and i just wanted to make the most of everything and this was a huge challenge for me but so so worth it.
