I was looking at the easystand glider and it looks like a very good thing. I contacted the company for a demo, their contact in this are contacted me and supposedly is getting a wheelchair sales company to bring it by for me to try. The guy isn't too pushy, but I think a little. I told him more than once I can't say I'm buying it and would need to figure out the funds, he assured me he understands. The other thing is he says the one he has was used for demonstration but is like new and for that reason he can offer me a discount. Of course I'm cautious of salesman but it may be a good deal. On the one hand I'm thinking they may be a lil pushy, on the other hand I'm thinking just maybe this is working out for a reason. All of that aside, what are your experiences, thoughts on this equipment? I'm willing to sacrifice and work extra hours to pay for it, but I don't want to just get it because it's there, I only want it if it will add great potential of progress or even make me feel like I got a full workout in. Heres are two videos I found: It's a scary thing to spend money you don't have and later regret it, but some things are worth it with spinal cord injury. I hope to figure out if this is just a pushy sales team, or if this would truly be worth my effort. Please help. Thank you.
Hey abacoian, I have one of these at home and go in it every week when my physiotherapist comes over. I like it because it's helps get the blood circulation and body moving and you also get some good cardio in there depending on how much of the machine you move on your own! My physiotherapist assists me with moving it since I don't have the strength or stamina to do it myself but I like going on it. It's designed so one can use it completely on their own (depending on strength & mobility) which is great. Give it a try if you can, most SCI rehabilitation centres should have one.
DJ thank you for this response. Do you notice if it helps with stretching your legs? From sitting all day I have tight hamstrings, I wonder if it would help with that. Please tell me any and everything that you can about it. Thank you so much. I would love to have one, it's a hard decision. Thank you for your feedback.
abacoian it definately helps stretch the legs especially once you get moving. I'm not so sure how much of a hamstring stretch you get though, it's much better than sitting but it's nothing too crazy. If your hamstrings are really tight now I'm sure it'll help a little bit. Like I said earlier, it is pretty hard trying to move the machine on your own and could even be tough for paraplegics so I suggest that you have someone to help you. I also find that my blood pressure drops fairly quickly when standing on it and not moving so the whole glider part helps you stay up there longer. I think the most important thing is fitment. Which ever vendor you get it from must fit you in it properly while they're installing it or you won't like it. Ideally it's gotta be adjusted for you so that it's comfortable and you wouldn't mind standing on it for long periods of time. These also come with additional hip supports and lateral supports (might be an add on). My trunk has become strong enough that I don't need the lat supports but I do use the hip supports. I can't really think of anything else, I'll let you know if anything pops up!
Thank you DJ. It is delivered and set up, no one to help me transfer into it right now. It looks newer, but it has the lever to stand it and lower, so a little disappointed it's not power. But it looks great, if it is good for me I hope they will offer me a fair price since it is a demo and not brand new. I am excited about how much the legs can actually move back and forth, thinking that might bring a great stretch.
It looks like it might be tricky to transfer to. Does someone just help yo pivot transfer to it? After a few times does it get easier?
abacoian I also wished it was motorized but honestly it's just another costly thing that could fail. The good old manual lever is actually quite easy to push since there's so much pushing torque the way they designed. I can't get myself up though because of my weak trunk and I start to spasm about halfway up which really throws me off balance so my physiotherapist holds me back as she's bringing the seat up. There's also a vest/chest strap included which'll support your upper body that I used in the beginning but I found it being to restrictive so I stopped using it. As for transferring, it was quite difficult in the beginning but now with the help of one person it's a piece of cake and I don't even need the transfer board. It'll probably take so time to find a technique that works for you but you'll find one eventually so no worries!
It wasn't has difficult to transfer as I thought, and I was able to stand myself all the way up with the lever. I used it for about 30 minutes and will again today. It feels like me doing my best to move it with my arms is also making me use other muscles in my core. The chest strap is great, I'm sure I will stop using it soon. A big purchase scares me, I think what if I get this and it breaks or something. Have you had any issues with it not working? I think it would be great, I'm just scared.
That's amazing abacoian!! If you can do it on your own and try getting on it everyday that'll be extremely benificial to your health!
It seems to have been built quite tough and I've had mine 2-3 years now using it about 2 hours each week and I've had no issues with it at all. It has gotten a little squeaky so I'm probably going to have to lubricate it soon.
Are you trying one somewhere right now or did you get a demo to trial at home?
A demo trial at home, it looks in great condition, they said they would give me a discount. Last night I used it for 45 minutes and tried some trunk exercises and squats, I see the possibility of many exercises while standing. But my right leg is still tight, I know two trys isn't enough. Right now I'm between if I could use this every other day it could bring me a lot of improvements, and it's a lot of money maybe I shouldn't risk it. I want to see if with help the arms can be pushed all the way to stretch the legs as far as they can go. Thank you for your help
Hello Abacoian, The standing Glider is a great tool for all Sci individuals. I use mine almost everyday. I use it like an elliptical trainer. It is the only piece of equipment made for us that really works. I would try one but if you keep your eyes open, many people sell there units. I have seen many for sale almost new for $1,500 to $2,000. The new ones are somewhere around $6,500 plus. I wish you well and have a Blessed Holiday season.
Thank you for this feedback. One question, I noticed that many are selling theirs, I do wonder about that. I'm still trying to decide, I do think it is a very good thing.
I know some sell them because they never use them after a couple months. Plus many people get them purchased thru insurance or state funding. That is why many are a good price. If you see one for sale, maybe it will be close enough for you to visit and try out before purchasing.
I am happy to hear that you use yours everyday. How long have you had it, have you ever had any maintenance problems? Please tell me all the benefits you have seen from using it. Have you seen any functional and strength increases? Anything you can tell me will be great, I greatly appreciate it.
abacoian I think it'll be an investment worthwhile. Echoing on what joemonte has said, you might be seeing a lot of these for sale because people purchase them and end up not using them which is what usually ends up happening with most home workout equipment. I've got a 6 year old treadmill at home that had probably only been used like 6 times lol. I use my standing frame weekly however because my physiotherapist comes to my house twice a week and helps me get on it.
If you know that you'll continue to use it and you know that you'll make gains by using it, don't let money get in your way if you can afford it.
Honestly I can't afford it but if I knew it would be worth it I can't let money hold me back from making my injury a bit better, I'm willing to make payments, I hope they will do that. I'm thinking of going for it. I will use it today, and hopefully tomorrow. Friday will make a week, no word from the company yet, maybe they'll let me keep it the weekend since it's a holiday:)
