Hi all,has anyone here had any thing to do with the peristeen system ? My contenance nurse has recommended it for me, we are trying to get funding for it, if we get the funding I will be the first australian to get government funding for the peristeen system, if I don't get the funding I will have to pay for it myself and at approx $3000.00 a year I would like some feedback about the system and what it did or didn't do for you. Cheers
Hey Butiki...my incontinent nurse wants me to go on it also...but im delaying it. I do think its a very effective way of evacuating and effective. I havent used it myself but i have a friend who does and she is happy with the method. It takes her approx 30 mins and thats it, shes good to go lol It has really helped her get some control and confidence back into her life...and she needs no help. Not sure if i could do it myself but it sounds easy enough if you have full hand function.
What I have read on other forums and googled about it,it seems like a good way to go. I have a video about it and it looks quite easy once u learn how to use it, but it's a very expensive way to do a poo
Butiki, I know nothing about peristeen so can't offer you any help. I'm sure other members will be able to give you some advice. I'll go read up on it now!

LOL Butiki..everything costs money these days haha
Butiki, ive been reading through some reviews and comments on peristeen by people who use it so i have copied the useful comments i found:
Question:When you first switched to the peristeen did you just do it in place of a normal routine? User reply: Yup I just switched straight away...
Question:Did you stop using supps pills straight away? User reply: Yup, didnt take anything the night before.. and nothing that morning
Question:Did the first time using peristeen go ok? User reply: Absolutely fine, It did the job, I had a bit of trouble knowing if all the water was out but that is something you learn when you do it, and it does take a bit longer the first few times.. but nowhere as near the time it took with jsut pills and supps.
When I told my doctor about it, I gave her the leaflet that coloplast had sent me, and she browsed through it and just wrote out a script.. I think her words were water has to be better than any drug, and as its now really a new thing.., its just a water enema, she seemed very excited about it. She was not excited about the cost, but the purpose of the our meeting was to discuss what would be better for me, not what is best for her budget!
Cons for me at the time were.... ( using pills etc) TIME!! ,pain from the drugs, stomach cramps, accidents. User comment....Pro's to go over to the system.... Time.. no more three hours trips to the loo!! Dont have to take nasty bowel irritants, no more laxatives and no more accidents.
The peristeen system if used properly, ie the water needs to reach all your stool for it to expel it out of your body, should completely clear your bowel out. No more, wondering if theres just a bit more after your routine, and going back to check 30 mins later! you flush the water into your bowel, it expands your bowel slightly and goes past the poo, on removal of the catheter it expels it. its as easy as that!
Question: do you find you have to keep to any particular diet eg - high-fibre in order to get best results from 'peristeen irrigation' or doesn't it really matter? Is it important to keep the stool soft, by taking a softener etc or is 1L of water quit adequate in order to expel everything without softeners, laxatives, etc? User reply: i take a little Senna and some Lactulose about 10 ml of each the night before (that bisacodol is harsh!) then 2 glyscerine supposotories in the morning and every 2/3 days i use the Peristeen,i think its a great method,i think the laxitive i take eases the transition of food through the intestines so i'm not constipated further up Great invention, personally i'd reccomend it to antone,ps dont be shy either,i lost that part of my dignity when i got injured
User comment: I've been using it for over 2 years now, and if love is a word to use in such situations, then I love it! I def love it in comparison to the 25+ years I've wasted huge amounts of time of my life crapping, getting AD, being totally wasted after BM, and having missed so many nights out because I've been 'busy'.
I would never go back, even with an £8 charge, I only use peristeen every 4 days. So that works out for me just £2 a day, and 10 minutes a day to poo - less time than many an AB takes per day.
I only go every 4 days because it empties me so well, really well. My method in brief:
Quick check to remove any spare debris, to make sure balloon sits well. 3 pumps of air in the balloon I use one bag of water, approx 800ml. Keep the balloon and the water in for approx. 5 mins. Remove the balloon, the water stays in 9 out of 10 times. Move about a bit, left right, have a hot towel over my head (I think warmth helps things move. Usually I will hear things gurgling and will get 3 deposits. I think it moves from different areas of the bowel. You always can tell the last deposit, it has an unusual aroma.
Sometimes I have a quick check if things haven't come out or down of their own accord. Usually 40 mins and its all over, shower, then bed!
I never need a second bag of water, and I never take any softeners or laxatives of any sort. And I'm really pants at eating enough fruit or raw veg to say I eat a really fibre rich diet. I do however start my day with a bowl or porridge.
Question: been having problems with peristeen lately. normally use it once or twice a day (i have had some of my intestines removed age 6 months).
I use 500ml at 10.30pm, then at 0000am, it is accident time and an early shower for me! been happening the past few days.
Any ideas as to why?
I ate my last meal at 1830pm.
Anyone ever had problems with not achieving proper empty? or leakage afterwards? (non water leakage)
User reply: I put the full amount, is there any reason you can't do 800-1000ml at once? Just the more you go the more you 'go', you stimulate it to work faster
User comment: I am now into my 2-3 week of trying peristeen and have had mixed results. One of my main problems seems to be getting the water inside and I seem to have water leaking or the balloon being expelled. I have tried pumping the balloon to a max of 5 times but once the pressure builds it seems there is only going to be one winner !! However while it has been frustrating there have been some positive signs and when it works it has given me a really good clearout. One thing that happened today was I did managed to get approx 1lt of water inside but only passed coloured water and no actual stool, after carrying out some digistim I did remove some stool so this got me thinking that maybe I needed to put some more water in to flush completely ? I do know that my nurse told me that when peristeen was being tested it was possible to use a maximum of 2.5lt but this was only possible for a few individuals and most would not be able to put such a large amount inside.
User comment: I got mine early this week and did it 2 times already. I would say that I'm pretty in love with it. Although the timing I spent in the toilet became longer using peristeen, the overall time spent is much lesser. That includes waiting time for my previous routine.
I have been drinking detox tea, 2 sennas and 2 fresh orange juice in the morning during bm days. The results I get is very good. The downside to this method is that you will not know when it will come. So it's kind of a full day of waiting game. Even so, there are chances of a second attack after the first blow. This often result in me getting confined at home during bm days even after it took effect.
Peristeen settles all my problems faced. I can now do what I want during the day and only go for bm after knowing that there are no more programmes for the night. Like edlee says, the result is legendary. The best part? No second blow after I leave the toilet. And I feels cleansed, inside out.
I hope I'll be able to use this permanently. It is something which really make my life less miserable since 4 yrs after my accident. Thumbs up!!!
Thanks Lara, that was very interesting and informative reading, the more I read about this product the more I want to try it. I'm sick of having bowel accidents, always have them when I want to do something or go somewhere, and I would give my left arm to wear normal undies rather than in contenance pads, I'm over these bowels, thought I had had a good result this morning after one hour on the toilet, but still had 2 accidents today

I have heard that it is an excellent way to, well you know, to go. It makes one very regular and is fairly simple to use. But there is something to be said about health insurance. For now I stick with dulcolax because I can afford it and it works for me.
Well got the news today, funding for the peristeen system has been refused, so my continance nurse was here this afternoon and I bought the system, $330 for the start up kit and 10 catheters, I will need at least 20 catheters a month so at $165 for a pack of 10 it's going to cost me $330 a month just to poo, lol how I'm going to afford it I just don't know, although my wife did suggest that I give up smoking, lol

Im sorry top hear Butiki that the funding was refused...thats so bad.....but im real pleased you have bought the kit and are going to start using peristeen..im sure you will feel better and have much more control over your bowels rather than the other way round.
Stopping smoking...what a good idea! ...it would be great if you could but i know its not an easy habit to kick
Lara, I will wear the cost because I want to have the confidence to start looking for a job, hopefully in the new year, and my dream is to be able to wear underpants not bloody contenance pads and just lead a life without the risk of pooing myself when I go out

Absolutely and well said! Its the least you expect and deserve...good luck with it!! ....i remember all too well the time when i had to wear those horrid big girlie contenance pads.....it isnt nice...i know
Butiki, I'm sorry to hear that buddy, I don't know why they'd refuse funding Consider your wife's suggestion, it's a good one! You'll be much better off a non smoker (health wise) and your wallet will like you
I hope the new system works out for you, be sure to let us know how it goes! Wanting to get back to work is also a great idea and I think everything will go how you want it.
