I think that UTIs are a very common thing for folks after SCIs, quite possibly because of bowel incontinence. Women get them more often because there is more room for poo to get into their urinary systems. And it seems to be hard to keep a catheter tube sterile.
I think the part about the feces getting in the urinary tract only applies if you have a lot of accidents. I agree with you that it is hard to keep the catheter sterile while you go to cath. More often than not, I end up inserting it into my vagina first because I can't find my urethra right away. Then, any of that bacteria is strange to your bladder. I've had about a million UTIs, even before my injury and before I had to cath. I'm working on getting rid of the one I have right now. I take Cran-Actin everyday, and it doesn't seem to do much. I'm thinking about looking into Microcyn since I already do bladder flushes sometimes.
UTIs are horrible, and maybe one day, I'll be able to eradicate them from my life completely.
I too suffer from reoccurant UTI's. The main cause is E-Coli but it's not like I have accidents or aren't clean with my catheterization procedure. I'm paranoid when it comes to cleanliness! I've created a post on constant UTI's before so check it out here if you haven't done so already.
I agree ladylimpsalot....some UTI's are due to bowel incontinance..or not helped and i am told that some UTI's that are E-coli can be from this problem.
Knight...i did that a few times also with the catheter but i then got pretty good at feeling my way so now i could do with my eyes shut..lol do you use a mirror at all?

Yes E coil is mainly found in the rectum area and digestive tract, being so close it is one of the common causes of UTI's, please make a difference between the presence of E coil and an E coil culture, the latter is more prob for an infection, one should also take an urine sample prior taking anti biotics, if infection is suspected, a sample test can reveals the exact type of bacteria and infection. the less anti biotics you take the more effective they will be when you do. the condom cath can also increase infection probability, by keeping the area moist for bacteria build up. i don't know why you wear it since you intermit, again if you leak oxy tablets can provide relief. i think intermit cathing 5 to 6 times a day at regular intervals is sufficient and to drink plenty of water too. A 400ml urine discharge is sufficient however not all people have the same metabolic rates and bladder size too. it will lesson the probability of bacteria build up. Look out for the classic signs of infection, buring sensation if you can feel, discharge, foul smell. and cloudy urine, again a fever or headache my be a sign too. \As for camburry juice please read the instructions must are full of additives, sugar and colouring. It is important to clean hands before cathing and wiping the tip pf the penis clean too. Avoid any pubic hair getting onto the cath too. As for women i can't really say much but they are more prone to UTI than men having a larger surface area which is kept moist. Well that my 2 cents on the subject.

I've gotten it down now, hardly ever miss, and i found out that my bowels were impacted from the anesthetic during surgery, and from all the pain pills. I didn't know being impacted/constipated can cause UTIs until my urologist pointed it out. I'm on oxybutynin since my bladder has become spastic since the surgery, but otherwise, my life and mobility has improved quite a bit.
Ah yes Knight..my contenance nurse told me the bowels affect the bladder greatly, if your bowels are full it can put pressure on the bladder and make it difficult to empty/cath at times.....
If you only have uti's from eColi, then you can use D-Mannose to wash out the eColi. Other bacteria is not affected by D-Mannose, only eColi. Most sci's are caused from bacteria and germs just inside the urethra that are pushed into the bladder from cathing.
Thanks Millard, I never knew that D-Mannose could only treat eColi, thanks for that. I do take D-Mannose every morning but I think I should increase my intake to 3 times a day. eColi is the most common reason for my urinary tract infections as well so hopefully it helps!

Haha Lαrα I thought invaluable meant "not valuable" and I went "huh?!" but then I realized that in this situation, the -in prefix isn't negative Darn English and it's confusions
well, I think I may have contracted another UTI. How, I do not know. I've been extremely clean and careful with cathing, my bowel program, sex, and showering. I'm not sure if this is a full-blown UTI yet. I did a flush yesterday, and plan another one today. Come to think of it, I had an allergic reaction to a body wash the day before yesterday. Could an allergic reaction happen in your bladder if the soap got in there?
