Hi, my name is Laurie and I’m not sure where to begin. I am 47 years old and 4 yrs ago I was in a single motor vehicle accident when I hit black ice and Filipped my truck several times. My level of injury is C4 thru to C8. I had a tracheotomy, a feeding tube, and a halo. My family was told I may not make it and If I did that I would be lucky if I was able to brush my hair or my teeth throughout a day. I was in ICU for 3 months and my stay in the hospital was for 8 months. I am a quadriplegic Asia D incomplete. I can walk with a walker. I too have been told that I am a miracle and the doctors are dumbfounded. I also look very healthy but if people could see my pain they would think differently. I have chronic pain. At one time lying in bed gave me relief now lying in bed is a different kind of pain. It doesn’t feel totally like nerve pain and as soon as I move a part of my body I have a spasm for a couple of seconds. When I talk to doctors about it they say yours is a special case and it’s hard for us to know what is happening with you. This is really getting old to me. I don’t get more then 1 1/2 hr of sleep at a time. I know this isn’t the best way to introduce myself to everyone but I have waited a long time to get this out and now that I have.... I spent the last 4 years being depressed and I feel myself finally coming around. I am starting to be thankful for what I can do and not what I can’t. I am very thankful for finding this forum and look forward to getting to know new people.
Hi Lthorne. Getting some sleep would probably be the biggest boon to your happiness right now. I’ll give you my very temporary “bandaid” to the sleeplessnes and pain problem...Kratom. It’s an herb that binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, yet it is not not an opioid. It’s legal in all but two states in the US. I haven’t checked on Canada yet. I use the Maeng Da strain. I take a half teaspoon of the green powder in a half cup of water. It alliviates pain and spasms for about three hours. Often by then, I’ve gone to sleep. I have a left leg amputated above the knee. That stump has clonus. (Think of Thumper the rabbit.) It’s very annoying and keeps me from drifting off peacefully to sleep. I order my Kratom though the mail. If they don’t have Maeng Da, Green Malay works, too. I’m glad you found us. Ttyl.
P.S. Okay, I Googled Kratom in Canada. It looks like you have a happy hunting ground for Kratom in Canada.
hi lthorne, welcome and I have to agree with vintage, sleep will do wonders for your sanity. medicinal cannabis vaping also helps in alleviating sleeplessness, I have similar issues as you regarding sleep caused by bladder. cannabis has allowed me to sleep as much as 5 hrs without waking, before cannabis only 2 hrs of uninterrupted sleep, helped me a lot.
My own opinion is that most doctors have too little experience with SCI to make any informed prognosis. If they had more experience they would know to keep their mouths shut since each case is unpredictable. If you ever have a chance to visit a specialized SCI center you will likely get better answers. Welcome.
Welcome lthorne, the sleep issue is very frustrating and it's so important for our general wellbeing. You have come a long way since your initial injury which is wonderful but it does take some adjusting to, this new way of life.
Good to hear that you feel you are on the better side of the depression, onwards and upwards!

Welcome to the forum lthorne, I myself had kind of grown accustomed to getting only two hours of uninterrupted sleep. Since for me not being turned every two hours I ended up with severe bedsores. Being in one position for too long also increases my spasms. If I'm not turned regularly I also, end up in the wrong position for mealtime. For me, it is a necessary evil.

Thank you Lara. I have been addicted to all your information since last night. Ive learnt more from you in 24 hours than I have in 4 years googling things. You are doing an awesome job. We all are lucky to have people like u that want to help others.

Thank you. I am really happy I stumbled onto this site. Mealtime is not something one wants to miss lol.
In no way wanting to derail this great thread,...Electricguy. If you had a matress like this one, you would not get bedsores, and you could sleep almost all night without being turned. I had the very basic, cheap-o version of this matress in one nursing home,...the version that the guy in this video warns against,...and yet that matress still was instrumental in healing my bedsores. I was gnashing my teeth the day that the nursing home sent “maintenance” to kidnap my matress, taking it down the hallway, across the next hallway, and into an empty room. I actually followed them to see where they were taking it. That’s how good it was. Mine was louder than the model in the video, had no inflated rim, had a solid vinyl cover over the entirety, and when it deflated was hard, with no padding whatsoever. Yet it was a hugh blessing to my poor Job-like bottom, and my sores healed, despite a deficit of care from staff.

Muchly appreciated. I will check into Kratom. 1 question...how bad does it taste? 😁

I smoked cannabis for sometime before my accident. For me when I had any pain and I smoked cannabis it seemed to intensify the pain. I wonder if eating it would be different? I do have a card to legally buy it so I shouldn’t let it go to waste lol.
Kratom tastes awful. Lol. Guaranteed not to get you addicted to the taste. But knowing that pain relief is on the way gets you past it. I will add, however, that those who have used cannabis are underwhelmed with Kratom. I’ve never had marijuana, so to me, Kratom rules.

keep in mind my experience, I had smoked previous to accident and I didn't care for it too much because it made me paranoid, tired and feeling down at times, when I smoked pre accident. after accident totally different now, it provides muscle relaxation which promotes sleep and a happy feeling which helps fight depression from the health issues we are dealing with constantly. I recommend vaping an indica cannabis oil. for me, eating is fine if u don't mind waiting an hour for drug to take affect, vaping provides relief in seconds, usually about 20 to 30 secs. they also have cbd oil for pain, that has no thc, I hear it s good for certain pains.
