Cases of coronavirus — people that are affected — seem to be going up at an exponential rate here in the UK. Mercifully only one person has died so far and they had underlying health problems. I have to admit that I’m quite concerned about the effects of this virus. I cannot cough, and since the virus affects the lungs, the outlook is bleak. I am modifying my behaviour. I’m not going out unless absolutely necessary. I’m limiting the amount of people that come into the house and I question them as to whether they have colds or coughs or feel unwell. I am no longer kissing people or allowing them to kiss me. I have enough food stored for at least six months. I haven’t panic bought. I’ve always kept a good store cupboard: tins of fruit, beans, fish, peas, soups and the like as well as cereals, rice and pasta. My garden water butts are full. Is this overreacting? I feel as if I’m about to go into lockdown. I’m particularly concerned for friends on this website, people on ventilators and others like me who find it difficult to cough. I wonder how you are all feeling about this virus, what steps you are taking to avoid it.

Mike I was going to start a similar thread but you beat me to it. I think it's good to be prepared but I think you're overreacting a bit. The flu has killed far more people than this new virus has. Have you ever had a bad case of the flu? I get a flu shot every year and thankfully have avoided a serious case of illness. I'm C6/7 and while I can cough I can't cough as good as I could pre-injury. Wash hands often, use disinfecting spray/wipes on commonly touched items like door handles. Don't be a recluse.
• Italian coronavirus casualties: 27,980 confirmed cases and 2158 deaths. • French coronavirus casualties: 6,633 confirmed cases and 148 deaths • Spanish coronavirus casualties: 11,178 confirmed cases and 491 deaths • USA coronavirus casualties: 4660 confirmed cases and eighty-five deaths (Dow Jones saw the biggest fall in history yesterday at 2997 points, attributed to the impact of the virus on the economy). • The FTSE has dropped 25% since the start of 2020
Professor Neil Ferguson at the Imperial College, the Centre for global infectious disease analysis paints a gloomy outlook for the UK, with as many as 260,000 coronavirus and cronavirus related deaths (people dying from their underlying health problems, accelerated by coronavirus). The estimated cases here in the UK are 55,000. Death toll in America predicted to be 1.7 million.
Okay so the death toll predictions might be wrong. The statistics are worst-case scenario. But this virus isn’t something to take lightly. Here in the UK we are being asked not to use pubs, clubs, restaurants or to gather in large numbers. The elderly and unhealthy have been asked to isolate themselves. The impact on the economy is going to be massive. We’re in for a long ride. This is not something that will be over and done in a month or two. Yes, I am right to be concerned. I’ve got a baclofen pump that needs refilling every twelve weeks. I’ve got to go and get it filled next Wednesday. I telephoned my Spinal Unit today and asked what precautions they are taking. “It’s changing day by day, Michael. Better phone up next Monday.” If this pump isn’t filled, it won’t be the virus that gets me it will be massive spasms and uncontrollable dysreflexia.

Agree totally Mike. Long road ahead and life may be quite different going forward - economically and socially. So m.any small businesses will fail and lives will change dramatically
I think at the moment it is hard for many to take it as seriously it deserves in the area I live as most of us don't personally know anyone affected and we keep hearing on the telly and radio how mild the illness can be from healthy people who have been diagnosed. I currently only know of two couples locally who are in self isolation as they have been abroad and have "a bit of a cough". There are only 12 diagnosed cases in my area. It is possible there are many undiagnosed or incubating cases. I guess that things will accelerate in the next weeks so we need to take this action now to slow it down so the NHS isn't over run. If we do manage to suppress it it will come back later and keep coming back till we find a vaccine which is at least 9 months away and probably longer.
However it is hard to contemplate 4 months "house arrest" - as this is what they are suggesting for over 70s (peter is 70). I need to join him so I don't give it to him. Also if I got poorly there is no one else to look after him.
We have just heard that the physiotherapist clinic cannot treat him as they have instructions to cancel all appts for over 70s. Without physio Peter will soon deteriorate. I am trying to get him some home visits - though not sure if that breaks isolation rules.
This is obviously nowhere like as serious as your situation and I sincerely hope that plans are being made for people like yourself who need life saving medications. Stay safe Mike - I am guessing you will be producing a lot of paintings in the next few months
Yes, Moco, the virus scenario for people with disabilities is bleak. I personally don't know anybody who has the virus or anybody self isolating, except myself. But I am taking it very seriously. We are at the bottom of the bell curve at the moment. Soon we will all know somebody who is ill or even worse. The effects on the economy will be catastrophic, with knock-on effects for anybody using healthcare services. I don't know whether our country or any country will be able to fully recover from this. If do it will take years for their economies to be robust again.
for a bit of optimism: NHK: Chinese Researchers Find Effective Coronavirus Treatment Why You Should Read: This is big news, if true. Chinese researchers say they have found a Japanese company’s drug very effective in treating novel coronavirus-related symptoms. I normally wouldn’t share something speculative like this, but NHK is a legitimate source and we could all use some hope right now.
Key Points:
Chinese government researchers claim the drug Avigan is effective in treating patients with the new coronavirus In two separate studies, patients given the drug tested negative for the virus after a median of four days, vs. 11 days for those without it. The trials also found x-ray photos showed improved lung condition in 91% of patients given the drug, vs. 62% for those without. No obvious side effects were noted. Researchers formally recommended using Avigan to tackle the virus.
Bottom Line: This is great news IF the research findings are accurate. They may not be. Even so, it would take time to manufacture and distribute the drug. We don’t know how fast that could happen and the problem is escalating quickly. So it’s a much-needed glimmer of hope but don’t celebrate yet.
personally I doubt I would survive a bout of this, and hubby is also high risk, so we are staying home except for him going for groceries, always wearing gloves. I cannot expel phlem without standing and bowing over the commode while coughing. It is a gravity assist, haha. So if I were sick I could not do that. Heck, I am sick, but not with this virus. Getting by, and I plan to take advantage of neighbors offering to deliver goods as soon as I can convince hubby this is good policy.
Someone local started a FB page, neighbors helping neighbors in the time of Covid 19. People are signing up.
mikeq, should either of us not pop back here in 2021, I will have exited thinking of you...
It seems to mainly be affecting older people >80 or people with compromised immune systems, my family even kiddo doesn't fit that category so I am not too concerned about it, that's not to say we don't take common sense steps like hand sanitiser when we are out if we need to touch things, staying clear of sick people etc. We haven't been part of the panic buying going on, the world isn't going to collapse.
My biggest issue at the moment is work, I work at a large boarding school with >700 boarding students we have to get them home for Easter holidays, and now is almost impossible due to Virgin Australia and Qantas cancelling ALL of their international flights, so in a mad rush we have been trying to billet the boarding boys with families of day boys for the Easter break. So far few people have been willing.
hello Nathanau. Schools and universities are closing here in the UK. I wished I shared your optimism. The world will not collapse but it will change fundamentally. This virus has the potential to devastate the economies of the Western world, which will have an enormous impact on all of us. Even cryptocurrencies are crashing. Like Tetra, I will not survive if this virus worms its way into my body. As Tetra will be thinking of me, as I breathe my last so I will be thinking of her.
for thou art the love that ruled my life and brought to me a truth unknown that in my death I will reside with you in love's eternal home

Nice Mike! Don't recognise it - one of yours?
Let's hope the Japanese drug is indeed the answer tetra, as I understand that a vaccine is a long way away.
I am having to be sensible just to keep my children off my back. Why do they think they are more savvy than I am about looking after myself and Peter? I get several nags a day and directives about what I should and shouldn't do. It's sweet and caring - but really?? I have been around a long time and kept myself and Peter safe so far.
nathanau, - sounds like quite a job homing that many children. Those children's families must be frantic. Sad for all the people affected - I am hearing so many stories of pain and hardship. Hard to stay positive
Yes, the poem was one of my own. There are four verses and that was the last one. I don't have problems with my children telling me what I should do or what I shouldn't do. It's more the other way round, with me urging them not to mingle with crowds of people.

Gosh, Nathan, what an awkward situation, including a bad example, when parents refuse to shelter a young persons's good friends.
I step in the water, but the water has moved on...
