Thanks wavewolf, I'll start using both from now on and see how it goes! delboy, I suspect it may be the condom + leg bag as well. I use a new condom every time and clean and re-use the leg bag for about 3-4 uses but the bacteria buildup must be when there's urine sitting in the condom. After cathing I leave my condom off for as long as I can (if I'm in bed) and void straight into a urinal. I'm actually on a high dose of ditropan, it's the long acting, one a day one, but I still void about 1000mg per day. E. coli is the main suspect and I do a urine culture if I feel a UTI. My symptoms are difficulty to void, pain when voiding, more AD before voiding and smelly urine. I can't really judge by colour because I've had really clear urine with bacteria in it. Butiki, what Lαrα said was correct. The signs of UTI vary for each person but I mentioned what mine are above. If your urine is dark, it means that you need to start drinking more. People with Foley/indwelling catheters are more prone to UTI's and that's really not avoidable. Right now, the best we can do is keep drinking lots of water, keep everything clean and maybe take some supplements such as a cranberry tablet if needed.
Silly question, how do you know if you have a UTI ?
Not a silly question at all! I have no sensation, and cannot tell if UTI is brewing by itching/burning/etc. Since I take vit B-2 as part of migraine prevention protocol, my urine is always blaze orange color! And even during severe UTI, urine was not cloudy. So I use test with a home kit every week to catch UTI early enough to try to mitigate with D-mannose (see above comments), to avoid taking antibiotic too frequently. There is only one effective antibiotic for UTI that I am not allergic to. The test kit I use is made by AZO, three test strips in a box for under $9 using included coupon. If I test strongly positive, then have culture done by my PCP. My symptoms of serious UTI include visual distortion, vertigo, and cognitive dysfunction.

Not sure I'll be much help, but here goes. I used to get constant UTI's. My only symptom was to start puking and would not stop until I had antibiotics and something to stop the puking. Originally after my accident (19 years ago) I used an intermittent catheter as I was told every 4-6 hours. Until I realized I could go on my own, which at that time my drs advised me to cath myself once a day to make sure I was emptying my bladder...which I was. During this whole time I had constant UTI's. I would be off of antibiotics for a week, maybe two at the most before I'd start puking again and start all over with the antibiotics. It got so bad the drs didn't know what antibiotics to give me that I wasn't becoming resistant to and I started getting shots of gentamicin every time. Then one of the drs suggested to keep me on a low dose of antibiotics all the time to keep it at bay. I started taking 1 keflex 500 mg daily and continued with cathing once a day and saw great results! I would get the occasional UTI after that, maybe 5-6 a year. After a while of doing this I stopped using a catheter at all and gradually stopped taking the keflex as well. Now I rarely ever get UTI's, except when I'm pregnant which is normal for anyone. So as I said I'm not sure how much help I've been since I know stopping using a catheter isn't an option for most people using them. However, maybe the low dose of antibiotics daily will help? Good luck to everyone!
i think one should take an urine sample on a regime test time frame say every 3 weeks for a regular test and ASAP is a UTI is suspected. The usual routine UTI triangle procedure of cleanliness, plenty of water and regular cathing should be adhered to.
I have been injured for 46 years and have had constant uti's. I even went the route with cranberry juice and extract and even D-Mannose. When I changed urologist, he asked me if I used cranberry juice or extract. I told him I used them daily and that my bladder was burning all the time. He told me my urine was too acidic and not to touch anything cranberry and to drink as much real lemonade as I could stand to make the urine more alkaloid. This immediately stopped the burning but the uti's continued.
In August 2010, I read about Vetericyn VF (aka Puracyn or Microsyn). I started injecting 20 ml of VVF into my bladder 3 days a week and have NOT had a uti in the last 37 months. Many people I have talked to have similar experiences. The very large thread can be viewed at sci.rutgers.edu/forum/showthread.php?t=133414. (about 1630 postings) I would recommend it even though Vetericyn VF is about $30.00 for a 16 oz. bottle. DJ and Lara you might like trying this also.
Hey trisha642, welcome to the forum! :welcome: Thanks for the input, I have been suggested to go on a daily low dose of antibiotics but I've been worried about becoming resistant to it. Unfortunately for me, I need to continue my intermittent catheterization. I currently only cath 2-3 times a day but have been advised by my urologist to cath every 4 hours. I really don't want to do that as it's my last priority if nothing works.
delboy, when I feel I have an infection, I do submit my urine sample to the lab for a culture. I hate how I get the results 5-10 days later if I do have a UTI. I wish they were quicker but there's really nothing I can do about it. I might try switching to another lab!
Thanks for the info Millard! I'm glad the UTI problem has subsided for you and hopefully it'll stay that way! I'll have a read on that VVF, I've never heard of it before! If it works for me I will accept the costs. I can't stand these UTI's any longer!
I've almost given up on trying to not have a UTI...I am so tired of going to the doctor, getting a requisition, going to the lab, peeing in a cup, waiting for the results, going to the pharmacy, getting my prescription, taking the drugs, getting better, and then having it all come back in a few weeks. I've gone to a urologist and had my bladder scoped. It is misshapen and stressed from constantly not emptying. So he recommended cathing myself. Which I used to do when I was just out of the hospital and then I quit, and tried to empty my bladder on my own. SO I got infections from not emptying it, now I get them from the catheters. So I can't win. It doesn't seem to matter how much cranberry I take or other assorted things, and I am not willing to give up my tea. It's one of my only happy things left. So whatever. It is what it is and I am not going to ever be able to go back to how I was. I just get to be an infection riddled gimp.
staceym, I know how you feel, that's exactly what it's like for me! I feel an infection, send a urine sample to the lab, wait 5-10 days for my results, get my meds, 2 weeks later start from the beginning I always thought that the more I go in with the catheter, the more I'm prone to these UTI's but apparently I'm getting them because I don't catheterize enough
I do bladder and urethra flushes with saline solution with a little peroxide mixed in. I do it everyday, as my urologist told me. I've finally gone longer than 2 days without a UTI! Finally, something works!

Thats interesting Knight, i haven't heard of flushing with peroxide in but il certainly look into it and try to find some info for our members and they can maybe discuss with their own urologists...thankyou for sharing

I really should do bladder flushes once a week but I haven't done one in months... Maybe a year! Woah, a UTI every 2 days?! I thought I had it bad!
