I face constipation issues since my injury. I have found that I can manage it somewhat, but the keyword is 'manage'. I have to regularly drink prune juice, eat dried pears, drink Kifer yogurt, and take senna at bed. Otherwise it stops coming out. The Kifer is delicious and has 12 active cultures. The prune juice is tolerable, the pears are great. It took me a while to figure out that I could not be random about it. Every day I have to consider it. Not a biggie in the scheme of things, I consider myself lucky in that regard. Many here helped with their inputs and experiences. I thank you all for that. This is a great sharing place that I have benefited a lot from.
Your routine sounds good! I am not fond of prune juice, makes me gag. But it is much better when warmed and with slice of fresh lemon in it! Alternative to dried pears, with same good result, is salad with bed of dark leafy greens (spinach, spring mix, romaine, etc) with fresh or canned pears, grated sharp cheddar cheese, and dollop of dressing (I use plain yogurt with a bit of mayonnaise for consistency). Very yummy!
So true, we must be deliberate, cannot be random, about our bowel management.

Has anyone here used Restilor? My gastrologist just gave me samples of Relistor 12. He said my opioids Percocet and Nucenta doses are too tiny to cause laxatives, stool softeners, and eating an insane amount of fruit to stop working. I'm active enough as to that escalating the problem. He said the nerve medications for the cord are equally responsible. In that, I have an extensive rap sheet. With a cord injury it's s a chronic condition that needs aggressive action. My constipation got worse since I started on the cordisol treatment for my adrenal fatigue? I'll have to ask my Endocrinologist if constipation is a side effect. The Relistor medication works but it's not in my insurance formulary. I can't afford to pay out of pocket. It comes in packages of 7 doses and costs $500. To continue, I would need my doctor to see if making it medically necessary would excuse their position on my case. The good news, it's a none addictive drug so it won't stand in the way of the intestinal track getting better at doing its job.

First time I have heard of this med. If I take opioid even in very small dose, my BMs turn to stones! So you may be likewise hypersensitive. Restilor sounds like exactly what you need, so I hope you can get it approved. Non-addictive and not causing GI tract to stop healing or take over its function--great benefits. The generic name of this med, methylnaltrexone, reminded me of a discussion of LDN in the forum for sarcoidosis. You might just want to give this a read: www.lowdosenaltrexone.org/.
Wow fishkybizniz, $500 for a pack of 7 eh? Like wavewolf has said, I've never heard of it but it seems like it'll do the job. Hope you can get it funded! Good luck
My post made it sound like my mgt works all the time. NO it doesn't. But it sure helps. Things come up in life that keeps me from doing it perfectly all the time. For example: I had MRI early morning and did not want to take the senna on schedule the night before. So bowel mgt took back seat.

That's understandable dodahman. Glad to hear that it's all under control for the most part though
It stills sounds better than reality is for me. I can do everything 'right' and still not poop on the 'the day'. That is the way it goes sometimes. not perfect. Also, I have not mentioned my final last ditch fallback food: King Oscar Sardines in olive oil. I keep it around, eat the most of the oil with the fish. 1/2 can is often enough. I have tried the mineral oil approach without much success. Have not tried just olive oil. When I have done all I usually do but it has not generated desired results, I start eating the sardines.... Good luck to all. and thanks to the many who contribute.

Today I did not drink enough, on purpose because I was in meetings all day, and therefore started to feel quite "bunged up". Ate a King Oscar sandwich with mayo and lots of Romaine lettuce, and everything came out all right! I had to laugh to read your post then.
So, there you have it folks, two testimonials for the power of king oscars! Glad to provide a laugh....and glad it works for you. I have never tried the sandwich approach. sounds delicious. thanks.

King Oscar in oil it is then. haven't had a BM for just over a week. Too many opiates during and after my surgery. I had to take a couple on the 8 hr. drive home with my foot on the dashboard. (no fun) I haven't had a chance to shop yet,but when I do it's King Oscar and prune juice with pulp. Thanks for the heads up.

kilg0retr0ut, must be olive oil to work best! That is more expensive, but healthier, delicious, and with a good pumpernickel or whole wheat bread, mayo, and the darkest green crunchy Romaine lettuce you can find--worth every penny. Pour that olive oil into the thick (dense) bread. I used a whole can of King Oscars on my sandwich! And did you try my idea for adding a real lemon slice to your prune juice and warming it (not hot)? It'll get you going with a smile!

That sounds so good Wavewolf. It' is time to try it warm, it's just I'm so lazy. Well worth the time to get going with a smile. I'll let you know how it works doesn't sound all great so I won't, but thanks again for some great info.
