Hi jakem, and welcome to the forum. I have been using peristeen for about a year now and it has changed my life. I don't know where your from but if your American I don't think there is much information about it yet. I'm not a medical type of person but I think it would work on a quadriplegic as well as it does on paraplegics, going on from what I've seen and researched. But if you google Coloplast and search for peristeen you will find all the information that you need. Cheers and good luck mate.
wow it has been ages since I last visited and so here I am once again. Its the time of year when we most think of others and remember those who are no longer with us but hey-ho I still have to write my Christmas cards to family and friends and thought I would wish you all the best of everything for this festive season xxx I have had my trial of sacral nerve stimulation and am gutted that it did not work on my erratic/unpredictable bowel issues so will now see the stoma nurse and prepare myself for this option. I have decided to keep coping as long as I can whilst getting my head around this decision ( at least my surgeon has offered the chance of a temporary stoma initially to assess whether this will better suit my needs and offer me my life back. Ok I am off now but believe me when I say I think of you all often and sincerely wish you all a happy Christmas x
Hi. This my first post. ) have read every ones post and was wondering if peristeen works the same on quads. Para v quad bowels are different I believe. I really want to try this but can't find bugga all research on the above.
Any help will b deeply appreciated. )))
Welcome to the forum jakem, to be honest Butiki is the best one to advise especially as he is from Australia too. I know many quads her use peristeen but im not sure about quads. Most Quads tend to use digital stimulation as they are upper motor neurone....and paras are lower so struggle to evacuate that way

I'm sure peristeen works the same for quads. I know some people who have tried it and were happy with it but everyone's different so I'd say your best bet would be to give it a try!

Hi butiki. I live in NSW. I will b giving a go. Gotta get RN to train the carers. ATM things down there are working. I just hate the after burning feeling from the bisalax.
I have had days with no burning feeling and days when I just burns all day.
Hi jakem, they go on and on about training, but it's really not that hard to use. The main thing is getting to know how many pumps to inflate the ballon and how much water to pump in. I do four pumps for the ballon and 400 to 500 mls of water, but that's me. You and your contenance nurse and carers will work it out.

Hi DJ was wondering if your friends that use peristeen have a reflex rectum or a flaccid rectum.?
jakem, if you ring coloplast back and ask to speak with their contanence nurse, she normally returns your call very quickly is you can't get her when you call, she a really nice lady and very knowledgeable. So call them and ask if you can speak with her.

Jakem. I tried peristeen 2 years ago I have a flaccid bowel and it did not work for me. Had to do the ostomy surgery just last nov. That worked. Richard

Hi everyone! I'm so happy to have found this group. I have an incomplete C5-6 injury due to a diving accident in 1976 when I was 15 years old. I've always been extremely healthy (no meds) but I suppose due to my age I'm beginning to have sluggish bowels. I currently take 5 Cascara, 2 Pantothenic Acid (for added peristalsis) and 1/2 cup Aloe juice a day PLUS 2 bisacodyl suppositories in the morning to get started. Whew! THEN dig stim to finish up. The whole morning routine takes about 2 hours. I'm really ready to try something else!! I've ordered the Peristeen kit but I have some questions on the logistics of usage when used by a quad. Exactly when is the water pumped into the colon? I use a rolling toilet chair that rolls over the toilet but it just seems as though it's going to be difficult for my caregiver to insert the catheter if I'm already sitting upright. It would be so nice if all that could take place before I got onto the toilet chair. Any ideas? Thanks so much for accepting me into your group. I look forward to many lively discussions with you all!
Your morning routine sounds like mine. Long and tiring. Peristeen seems like it'd be a good idea for me too but I don't feel like trying it out yet. I've have no previous experience with it but hopefully someone can answer your question.
