Welcome to the forum, richard and naturegirl! Bowels and bladder issues have a way of uniting us in purpose to overcome... Richard, you are right that Peristeen and other types of enemas and suppositories do not work with a flaccid bowel. Naturegirl, if you are in the USA, Peristeen is now available here: www.coloplast.us/Peristeen-Anal-Irrigation-System-en-us.aspx. Medicare/Medicaid does not cover it, nor do most private insurers. This may change, but probably not quickly.
jakem, if you ring coloplast back and ask to speak with their contanence nurse, she normally returns your call very quickly is you can't get her when you call, she a really nice lady and very knowledgeable. So call them and ask if you can speak with her.

Ok I rang them and will b trying it out within 2 weeks. Coloplast will b training staff x 3 session. Was talking to SCI continent nurse and he was saying some of his clients get upto ten sessions out f one catheter
Hi mate. I have couple of questions I hope you done mind me asking. Do you just use tap water? Do you heat it to 37c? How do you heat it? Do you use filtered water? Do you have any tips ?
Hi jakem, yes I just use tap water, there is no reason to use filtered water. As far as heating goes I just make the water warm by mixing hot and cold water, I don't use a thermometer, just my skin. The best tip I can give you is make sure you pee before you use your Peristeen
Ok have used it twice. Only could hold 300 ml. First ten minutes clear water came out. Then ten minutes later the heavens opened. Hard to tell how much as it was runny, is that normal? I was expecting formed poo. Could of been because of the movicol. I use 2 satchels the night before. Only thing I was not expecting was the burning sensation. Was hoping that would not happen with peristeen, maybe it's the movicol.
Will knock the movicol on the head for a couple of nights.
It seemed to work good. Had no accidents after. It took bugga all time to work. Nurse Followed the instructions.
Hi jakem, before Peristeen I was taking movicol, cloxal ( can't spell it lol ) and suppositories and digital stim. I have not used any of these since starting Peristeen. Mine is never formed poo, always watery, and I usually put 400 to 500 mls of water up there and I do it every morning. The only bowel thing I take is Benifiber, three teaspoons in a glass of water every morning after my BP. Give me a call if you want to have a chat about it, I have PM'ed my number to you. Please feel free to call me.
Hi mate. Went today and bugga all came out. A couple of kinda formed stools. I don't think much water came out. I am going every 2 days. I noticed on the peristeen how to use chart it says to start out with everyday but my RN said not to. The staff don't mind changing guidelines but when it come to theirs it's a different story lol.
Hi DJ according to the coloplast nurse every three days is what a lot fine. I think that would apply to reflex bowel. Flaccid however would need every day I would think.
Today I was going to go again but when I checked out the d colon it was clear and my guts were very sunken in.
Really every three days eh jakem? I guess you just have to go with what you feel but I'm glad to hear that you're liking it so far!
All I want is to be able to feel good afterwoods. I want to go everyday using peristeen at first but my spinal nurse has instructed me and the carers to stick with every 2 days. He also said water temp is ok from 24 c and after 30 min do a PR and only remove any solid stool lol. This is a spinal nurse.
I said the peristeen instruction sheets say different. On the bottom of the instruction sheets it says to do every day when starting. Water tmp 36 to 38 c. In regards to PR I am not sure what it says. I just know if it's not clear I am going to burn all day.
Oh and get this the instruction sheets that are provide by Coloplast my care provider has copied them and changed some of the wording.
Hi jakem, do what the coloplast instructions say. If you have a flaccid bowel do it daily. There is no need to do a PR at all, that's why your using the product to stop all that stuff. It's supposed to make life a bit easier not harder. You do it when you want to, it's your body not your nurses, ok mate.
