I am having technical difficulties here! The scotch tape on the feet keeps the nerve pain away. I still need a muscle relaxer for the muscle pain. I haven't noticed any dryness or stickiness in the morning, and if I do, there is always soap and water and lotion. I am still taking the alpha lipoic acid. Compared to the price of Gabapentin, both financially and brain wise, this is so much cheaper!
I would like to try the lipoic acid, but wouldn't know how it was doing since I'm already on other meds. To quit the meds I'm on would be tough, they seem to do the job in the pain area, but I would rather be more friendly to my body. Wish I would have heard of this early on, I went over a year without meds, and that would have been a great time to give a whirl.
It would be a good idea to ask your doctor about it. There are so many meds that we are taking that are likely to cause more harm than good. But you are right, I am not a medical professional and I can not necessarily say that your body would react like mine does! I am always looking for alternatives, because I know that we all want to stay as healthy as we can. In the mean time, I am keeping the scotch tape people in business!

I don't believe I insinuated you were a medical professional. I say again, I'd like to try the lipoic acid if I didn't have to ween off of the lyrica to do it. If scotch tape doe's the trick, I'm happy you found it.

Believe it or not, I am a Medical Assistant, but I can only say what has worked for me. Praise the Lord, my nerve pain is just about gone. The tape is working! Or the nerves are dying, not even trying to fire anymore.
I appreciate these groups and these forums because we can get advice from others who have the same problems and the same interests. Those who suffer from CES seem to know a lot more than doctors sometimes.
I am the crazy who sleeps with one coat of scotch tape on the bottom of my feet at night. My nerve pain is pretty much gone! I am also taking alpha lipoic acid. I saw someone else mention the tape and figured that it is a lot cheaper than most meds and it is very easy to use. I don't understand it, but if it works, it works!
And there are no side effects!
do you keep the tape on all the time or do you remove it in the morning...
I come on the forum to deal with my nerve pain distraction. I am not on any meds for it. I was on Keppra(anti-seizure med) for almost a year until it stopped working. I was so absent-minded on it, it was dangerous. I'd be driving and suddenly not know where I was going, or why I was even in the car I tried gabapentin then, and it gave me chest pain, so I gave up. I use nerve confusion as a technique sometimes. I use a dry washcloth and lightly rub it on my painful spots. It confuses the nerves and gives me some relief. It works really well for the "bugs-are-crawling-under-my-skin" feeling.

I would not advise you to do anything without checking with your doctor. I think that sometimes you might need medical supervision to come off the Gaba and depending on how long you've been taking it and your dosage. What made you finally get medication after you went a year without?

Hello ladylimpsalot, I went almost two years without anything, but I would get these shocks mostly in the evening all night long sometimes. They came in clusters, sometime two or three spots firing jolts through my legs and feet. These are the make you make pain noise, soaking wet with sweat, heart racing shocks. My wife was worried and I was getting so little sleep I could hardly function. I take care of my daughter, and I was afraid of making some kind of mistake. Also without meds the time on my feet ended at about 3pm on a good day. So when I started seeing things I finally caved and went to the doctor. I was put on Lyrica 100mg,and 100mg of Tramadol a day. The Lyrica knocked out 95% of the shocks, I still get rouge ones here and there, but the 8 to 12hr episodes chilled right out. I didn't take the tram right away, but when I did I found it numbed my legs a bit from the knee down. Took away some of the exhausted, hot, tinglely pressure stuff and I found I got 4 or more hours on my feet. I decided I wanted to spend more time with my family and live as close to normal as I can.The meds give me a better quality of life. There may be a price to pay and everyone has to balance the pro's and cons of taking medication. The side effects suck, but I didn't see a better option. I hope that answered your question, one side effect is not being much smarter than a rock at times. Have a good one....Mark

Mark, I could not get by with the nerve pain and I could not live much of a life with this muscle pain. I am just saying that alpha lipoic acid does the same job as the gabapentin without the side effects.
Hurrah for modern medicine! It is a big help to so many people.

ladylimpsalot, Have you ever had the shocks I've described? I going to be honest, and it will offend many here, so be it. Aside from the shocks I wouldn't be taking anything. The hot tingling, stabs, feeling like it waking up from being asleep, the weight pressure, zingers, buzzers, bugs crawling, muscle fatique, hammer toe, curled toes, cramps from constipation, all minor discomfort compared to these shocks. This is NOT your normal nerve pain. I miss a dose of Lyrica I can feel the electricity ramp up in my leg. I have alot happening in my life right now, taking the time to ween off the Lyrica, to try Lipotic Acid is not even a option. Show me your sources that say the LA does the same as Lyrica. I said I would have tried it in the beginning, but I can't mess with changing meds at this time no more than I'm going to put scotch tape on my feet. I know your trying to help and I'm sure I've offended you by now, sorry I can't jump on the I'm so proud I don't take meds bandwagon right now. Mark
